I'm with Rotherham in the Championship in 18/19 and after challenging for the play-offs for the last two seasons it turned out I was challenging the clubs finances too much as well so I had a HUGE clear out and left myself with a smaller squad with less quality... So I'm asking exactly what the title states. Is my team simply not good enough? Or am I hopeless at the game?

Without seeing what your squad looks like it's hard to say, but it seems like it's fact your team has less quality. I'm guessing you sold off some of your key players.
Also the size of your squad will have an impact, and as you said your squad is quite small you won't have the chance to rotate much. If you have a bad spell with injuries, then your lack of squad depth would cause problems.
I would maybe try and bring in a few decent players in on frees if possible.

Thanks for the response man, unfortunately I've been sacked! I'm normally a big fish in a small pond so I never need to worry about this but I've decided to try and take a team through the divisions this time it didn't go well but I know where I went wrong. I sold 10.3 million worth of player and brought in 4 free transfers at a much lower quality. We were making money in the end but I totally sacrificed quality, silly decision
