Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has had success playing a swift counter attacking tactic with a barcelona, man utd or any other top team? I feel like it could really suit players like messi when on the break, but I have a fear of not being in control of a game. I always tend to go with "standard" and "attacking" for my formation and philosophy, and usually achieving success, but I want a new challenge. The problem is that I have never tried counter-attacking and could use some advice from more experience counter punchers!

Thanks,

Matt

I rarely start off with a counter attacking strategy but with Brazil, i spend about a while counter attacking, as like to grab an early goal on overload, another on the break and then kill them off with a change to attacking. I often score goals on the counter with my Arsenal team, but i'm generally on 'attack'. Man Utd proved it's a good tactic in real life as they tore apart Arsenal at the Emirates, a couple of times, other teams, such as Utd or Liverpool have beaten me by sitting back all game and counter attacking through Gerrard, Torres, Mascherano and/or Benayoun at the end of a match and nicking it against tired legs. Your defence have to be very well disciplined and organised and probably be defending deep a lot of the game. In FM i often find it's a little risky as a good team will push and eventually get through if you don't first. It will be interesting to see how other people react to Counter Attacking with big(ger) teams

Thanks for the reply joss. I see what you mean about counter-attacking in real life, in many ways thats what inspired me. I think I might just give it a test, using very solid defenders and maybe an anchorman. Fast tempo, direct, and maybe focus passing to the wings sounds like a start anyway.

I recommend Inter and play a 4-3-1-2 formation with counter settings and two wingbacks or one defending fullback/one attacking wingback so that the AMC got more passing options. Won the treble four times in a row with them, and crushed the Serie A.It is possible, and it is deadly when the team is gelled and good! : D

Thanks mate, is that 3 mc's or dmc's?

You shouldn't play counter attack when playing with the likes of Barcelona or Man United because teams will set up defensively against you so you'd get too many draws.

It does depend what team you are and often the team you are playing. For example I currently have a save as Celtic and play 'attacking' against teams in the league other than Rangers. When I play Rangers away or play strong teams in Europe I convert to a counter-attacking strategy. And, I have never lost to Rangers in 2 and a half seasons (H)

Hey mate, I've used 4-3-1-2 a fair bit with defensive or countering tactics and it has worked pretty well. I have 3 centre mid players, with the middle one set to defend usually. I like to use the 'counter' philosophy because I still get players attacking but they defend as well (sounds pretty obvious and stupid lol).

Thanks folks. Yeah Jack I get what you're saying, and it is my concern. Think I'll test it, but it's so easy just to revert back to my favourite formation when things get tough. I've won wherever I've played with it so it's always tempting, but I'm just looking for a new way to play.

Team Instructions
Philosophy: Rigid
Starting Strategy: Counter
Closing Down: Stand-off more

All other settings on default.

Player Instructions
GK: Goalkeeper, defend
DL: Full Back, automatic
DCl: Centre Back, defend
DCr: Centre Back, defend
DR: Full Back, automatic
DMCl: Anchor Man, defend
DMCr: Deep Lying Playmaker,
ML: Defensive Winger, support
AMC: Attacking Midfielder, attack
AMR: Defensive Winger, attack
FC: Poacher, attack

thats on the basis that you right winger is your much better one offensively. if you left winger is, mirror the formation

Hm. I always find if I use attacking, we move the ball too quickly and lose possession at the edge of their penalty area. Control seems to work better, and allows us to move the ball around in front of their area just enough to allow a run to happen, Ozil to receive a pass, and play in Forlan or Rochina to thump one into the top corner. (In charge at Valladolid at the moment.)

Also turn on counter-attack anyway in advanced... Not like you have to play the counter-attacking style to take advantage of counter-attacking play.
