Inter Milan have announced the retirement of veteran defender Javier Zanetti just months after he claimed he wanted to sign a contract extension. Reports suggest Zanetti felt he was ready for a new challenge as becoming a manager as he had accomplished everything during his playing career.
Zanetti has had a career to boast about achieving mounts of success with Inter which include;
Serie A (5): (2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10)
Coppa Italia (4): (2004-05, 2005-06, 2009-10, 2010-11)
Supercoppa Italiana (4): (2005, 2006,2008, 2010)
UEFA Champions League (1): (2009-10)
UEFA Cup (1): (1997-98)
FIFA Club World Cup (1): (2010)
Inter held a press conference earlier on today and here's what the man himself had to say: "Unfortunately, today is the day i have decided to hang up my boots and retire from football. I sustained a lengthy injury at the start of the season and that made me think am i really still cut out for this? I did consider extending my contract for an extra year but eventually i decided i was ready to retire and step into football management. It's a sad day for me to leave Inter because i have been here for many years and loved every second of it but i believe this is the right choice. Hopefully someday i can return to Inter and manage them and return them to former glory just like i achieved here. I have been doing the management course's over the past few months and i am very excited for my next challenge, i believe i have made the correct decision."
Can Zanetti replicate his playing abilities and successes in the dugout? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for more information on the subject.
