1. START OF SEASON EXPECTATIONS

The Roma board gives you three options to choose from: Continental qualification, title challenge, title winner. I suggest taking continental qualification to be on the safe side since even if you did take any of the other options, your transfer budget is still pretty much the same. This will give you a transfer kitty of €500k and a wage pot of €1.5M a week. Roma's financial problems are well documented hence the tiny transfer kitty All your financial skills will be called into question if you are to succeed without spending a fortune. You will need to make very smart investments while selling off deadwood or below par players so as to raise some much needed transfer money.

2. BACKROOM STAFF: WHO TO KEEP, WHO TO RELEASE?

The majority of Roma's staff are not good enough for a club of it's stature. That being said, I recommend keeping your assistant manager, Christian Damiano, who has excellent motivational skills and is decent all round the board, fitness coach Vito Scala who has a 4.5 star rating in either of the fitness categories, and Giorgio Pellizzaro, who is a 4.5 star goalkeeping coach. Get rid of everyone else, including scouts except for Bruno Conti, and some suggestions as potential replacements are: (NOTE: Some of them may not be on your game depending on the database size and custom leagues you choose to load)

  • Gian Nicola Bisciotti (Fitness coach)
  • Samir Zulic (Ball control coach)
  • Antony de Avila (Attack coach)
  • Jens Bangsbo (Fitness coach)
  • Andreas Kopke (GK coach)
  • John Cooke (Tactics coach)
  • Massimo Bonini (Defense coach)
  • Lido Vieri (GK coach)
  • Oliver Bierhoff (Scout)
  • Andrea Pastorello (Scout)

If you want to sign other staff, you can use Hellroker's coach list.

3. THE SQUAD

GOALKEEPERS:

Roma start off with veteran Bogdan Lobont, Doni, and Julio Sergio. Julio Sergio is easily your strongest keeper and definite first choice. As for the other two, you need to decide on whom to keep as backup keeper. I recommend keeping Lobont and selling off Doni for two main reasons. Firstly, Doni is on a massive pay packet (around €70k per week) and given Roma's financial problems, that is a big waste of money considering he isn't even good enough to be first choice. Second, you can raise approximately €8.25M (see screenie) by selling him off. This is valuable transfer money that you can use to strengthen other areas of the squad.

Roma have a pretty solid core with the exception of the right back position which needs to be addressed. At the center you have the vastly experienced duo of Juan and Phillipe Mexes, who should be your first choice pairing, with the Burdisso brothers, Guillermo (who is on loan for the season, but make sure you pay the €4m pre-agreed transfer fee to sign him permanently) and Nicolas, also in the frame. These two are more than capable for filling in whenever either Juan or Mexes isn't around. If you can, then just sell off Simone Loria, who isn't up to scratch. If not, then at least make sure you loan him out without having to pay any of his wages.

At left back, ex-Liverpool man John Arne Riise should be your first choice. He is solid defensively, has decent pace, a good crosser, and boasts a fierce long shot attribute. His backups, Aleandro Rosi and Antunes, are not equally impressive, however. You should probably get rid of one of them. Antunes is more solid defensively but I chose to get rid of him and keep Rosi mainly because of Rosi's versatility. Rosi can also fill in as a right back, wide midfielder, or attacking winger on either flank. As for Antunes, it is quite tough to sell him permanently, so good luck because you’re gonna need it. If not, then just loan him out for a small fee.

At right back, Roma have the aging Marco Cassetti and Rosi. This is one of the weak links in the Roma side. You definitely need to go out and invest here. Cassetti may have decent stats but he is 33 and sooner rather than later, a replacement will have to be signed. It is your choice whether you decide to spend big and sign a first choice right back, or keep Cassetti around as first choice for another season or two and sign a younger player right now. Some suggestions if you decide to spend big are: Jesus Gamez - €9M,
Mariano from Fluminense - around €12M, or Gokhan Gonul - €9.5M. I’d go with Gonul if this is the route you choose. He is steady in both defense and attack and his wages don’t kill you. Also, if you do splash out here, then make sure you sell Marco Cassetti since you should be able to raise about €3.6M for him (See screenie below).

If, instead, you choose to keep Cassetti around and sign a younger player who will then be groomed to eventually become first choice, I highly recommend Cornel Rapa from FC Otelul in Romania. At 20, he is one for the future although his stats leave you with the impression that his age may be well higher than 20. At a bargain price of €3.5M, be sure to move in quickly to steal him under the noses of other potential suitors. Give him sufficient game time, a good training schedule, and tutoring from Cassetti, and he should become your first choice in a couple of years, just in time to take over from the then declining Cassetti. If you don’t wish to sign/you miss out on Rapa, then another suggestion is the slightly more expensive Alberto Lora from Sporting in Spain.

MIDFIELDERS:

Overall, Roma have a very impressive midfield. From the passing range and creativity of David Pizarro to the aggression and tackling of Daniele De Rossi to the dribbling and flair of Jeremy Menez, Roma have a near-perfect midfield. However, the one main position that does need strengthening is the right wing. First and foremost, I highly recommend getting rid of Rodrigo Taddei. He is old, on a big salary, and his stats aren’t that impressive. You should be able to sell him for about €9.75M (See screenie). Given the players at your disposal and the signings you choose to make, you might end up lining with Vucinic on the left wing and Menez on the right wing. These are both excellent players who you should definitely keep. Vucinic is naturally a striker, but he is comfortable playing as an inside forward on the left wing, or as an attacking midfielder. Menez is a great dribbler and has good pace as well. He can supply balls into the box or cut inside and use his decent finishing and long shot stats to have a pop himself. In the center, you have De Rossi, Pizarro, Fabio Simplicio, Simone Perrotta, and Matteo Brighi.

Assuming you line up with a 4-2-3-1, De Rossi and Pizarro should be your two deeper-positioned midfielders. De Rossi’s job is mainly as a ball winner although he can function as a deep-lying playmaker too, while Pizarro is the perfect deep-lying playmaker. He has excellent passing abilities, good dribbling, and a decent work rate. As cover for these two, you have Perrotta, Brighi, and Simplicio. Keep Perrotta. Despite his age, he is a work horse in the middle, perfect for the big games where closing down the opposition is essential. Simplicio will primarily act as backup for Pizarro. He does have decent attributes and is good enough as backup and no more. In addition, even if you tried to sell him, he would be reluctant to move since he has just joined Roma. So keep him as cover for Pizarro.

As for Brighi, he too, like Perrotta, is a work horse in midfield. Unlike Perrotta, though, he is well-rounded possessing good passing abilities, fairly good creativity, as well as decent defensive stats. He can fill in for either De Rossi or Pizarro. However, since you already have cover for both the deep midfielders, and you are short on cash, you may choose to sell Brighi to the highest bidder. As a test, I managed to sell him to Zenit for €12.25M, which is quite a lot of cash. So it is up to you whether to keep Brighi around or cash in on him and use the money to sign other players.

Potential signings for the right wing may be: Renato Augusto - €7.5M, Karim Ait Fana - €9M, Arda Turan - €10M, or my personal favorite, Willian from Shakhtar Donetsk for about €6.75M. Willian boasts excellent pace, dribbling, flair, and his finishing is decent as well. A cheaper option is Moroccan-Belgian winger Mehdi Carcela who should cost only €2M. It is your choice whether to splash out or buy cheap.Another great suggestion if you're trying to save money, is to sign Danny from Zenit on a loan deal. Granted, you have to pay quite a bit to get him on loan and he does have a big wage, but he seems worth it. (Check screenie below for loan offer)

STRIKERS:

View attachment 146864View attachment 146873View attachment 146872View attachment 146875

Roma’s attack, consisting of club legend Francesco Totti, Mirko Vucinic, Marco Boriello, and Adriano, is well-balanced but there is a general lack of pace. None of the strikers have a pace stat higher than 15. That being said, all four of them are lethal finishers and generally boast excellent off-the-ball movement and decision making. This area is very strong as it is hence there is no need for investment here. Totti, Vucinic, and either Adriano/Boriello can all start together in the squad depending on the formation you choose to play. Totti’s creativity, movement, vision, and finishing mean that he is more suited to a Trequarista role rather than as a line-leading striker. I recommend playing him as a AMC.

Vucinic is an excellent dribbler and finisher with decent pace which is why he ought to cut in from the left wing and either use his creativity to supply through balls or have a shot himself. He can lead the line as well if you want to play him as a forward. Boriello is a real asset to the side. He is a complete forward who is an excellent finisher, dominant in the air, strong physically, sufficient pace, and has clever movement. He is only on loan for this season, although he will join the club permanently next summer. Adriano has many similarities to Boriello but his poor work rate and low determination put him further down in the pecking order. My suggestion is to play Boriello as a lone striker with Adriano covering for him in case he gets injured or suspended.

YOUNGSTERS:

Roma’s reserve and youth squads have a lot of sub-par players who are never going to be good enough to wear the Giallorossi’s colors. Get your assistant to filter out your youth team players by their star ratings, and release all those that fall below at least 3 stars. There are a few promising prospects however. Alessandro Crescenzi, Simone Scerrati, Stefano Pettinari are all capable of breaking through into the first team. Be sure to tend to their needs with respect to training and tutoring. My favorite, however, is 19-year old Andrea Bertolacci, who is currently out on loan at Lecce.

With enough playing time, good traning, and tutoring, he should go on to become the eventual heir to David Pizarro in the starting lineup. Be sure to nurture his talent. Besides that, all I will say is that, make good use of your scouts. Send them out to hunt down the next big thing, be it in Europe or South America or Africa. Once again, in my opinion, it is always better to bring through a youngster rather than spend big signing proven players. This especially makes sense given Roma’s precarious financial situation and long-term debt.

TRANSFER SUMMARY:

Suggested In’s:

1. Cornel Rapa - €3.5M
2. Willian - €6.75M

Suggested Out’s:

1. Rodrigo Taddei - €9.75M
2. Doni - €8.25M
3. Marco Cassetti - €3.6M (This is solely your choice though)
4. Matteo Brighi - €12.25M (Again, this is your choice)

4. TACTICS

Given all the attacking talent at your disposal, you are inclined to play an attacking brand of football. A fluid attacking 4-2-3-1 formation at home combined with a balanced standard 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3/4-5-1 away from home should do the trick. At home, like I mentioned earlier in the guide, play with two deep lying players i.e. De Rossi and Pizarro, three ahead of them in more attack-minded roles i.e. Totti in the center, Menez/Willian out on the right, and Vucinic on the left wing. Marco Boriello should lead the line. I would advocate a short passing game since Roma have some really good passers, the best of whom is Pizarro of course. Away from home, you could keep the same formation but with a less attack-minded mentality, or if you choose, you could drop the AMC even deeper so as to tighten up the midfield. I will not elaborate too much here since this should be your choice/decision.

5. OTHER MATTERS

  • The board will generally grant you the following: A feeder club to increase profile in another country so as to reap greater merchandising benefits, improved youth facilities, and an increase in the transfer budget if you persist, although this increase is minimal and almost negligible.
  • Francesco Totti is current captain with Daniele De Rossi as his assistant. These two should remain in charge as they are fantastic leaders. If, for some reason, both of them are out at the same time, Phillipe Mexes should be next on the list of captains.
  • Your best shot at winning a trophy in the first season is the Italian Cup. Try to get to the last eight of the Champions League since its lucrative nature makes it a valuable source of income the further you get. Top four should be your minimum target in the Serie A although top 2 or even winning the title, is possible.
  • For training purposes, I highly recommend Dunc's training schedules, which I personally use all the time. You can also use IanC's training or KevyMatts's training or you could design your own schedules to custom-fit the requirements of your players. This is your choice, once again.

And that about wraps up the guide. Enjoy :) Feedback and constructive criticism is most welcome. :)

Im starting a Roma save cos of you.

looks like an excellent guide, though I'm afraid "La Giallorossi - Il cuore di Roma e potrebbe" doesn't mean much in italian ;)

Haha......I just used google translate to give it a nice touch. Do you know what it means? I mean besides what I think it means.

Good guide, a lot of depth and screenshots to help. Who is that player fourth from left making that face? That's probably one of the best facepacks I have seen for a player.

Thanks mate. That's Simone Loria, who is actually a defender but it seems like I put him in the wrong section. :)

Oh ok. I though it meant "AS Roma: the heart and soul of Rome". **** you google translate, haha. I'll just get rid of it altogether. :)

google translate is the evil :)

that would be "il cuore e l'anima di roma" in italian. And if you want to be perfect it's "i giallorossi" instead of "la". Though I'm sure people will be more interested in the quality of your guide rather than your Italian :D
