As I've stopped making tactics for this years version, I thought I'd write up a guide on how to create your own and the thinking behind classic tactics and how to recreate this in FM 2011.

Right Lets get started.

I've always found the best way to create a tactic is think how YOU like your football played. For Example I prefer playing with Wingers and 2 Forwards, therefore the 4-4-2 and 4-2-4 are the formations that suit this. I also like Attacking football and High pressure, something achieved greater in a 4-2-4 than the Flat 4-4-2. So the formation I'll use is the 4-2-4. Pretty simple really. If you like Lone forwards and a Holding mid then a 4-5-1 could be for you.

I then start to think about the Style of play I want to implement. Again, by personal preference I like short, simple passing with a mid-high tempo to keep things exciting. I like my team to entertain and keep the opposition on the back foot, while not commiting to many defenders forward in-case of the Counter-Attack.

So that translates into this:

Fluid Play works better with my style of Attacking "tiki taka" football, so that was selected. The Short passing and expressive creative freedom help keep my game exciting. Because I didn't want to launch to many people forwards I chose not to have a high press but High aggression so my players Dog the opposition when not in the control of the ball. I've always prefered Zonal Marking over Man Marking so that was Chosen. Mixed Crossing always works for me so that was my choice. And I prefer to have a few people set with a free role and thats always easier when The team is told to Stick To Position.

That explains my thought process when It comes to Team Instructions and Formation.

Next We'll move onto Player Roles.

When It comes to player roles I always think 'Who do I want them to play like IRL'. E.G I've got a talented Midfielder called Mauro Antunes for my Belenenses team, he's got good stats for an Attacking Playmaker so I decided my template would be Andres Iniesta of Barcelona. Iniesta is very much an Attacking Playmaker who makes driving runs past his forwards, whilst keeping his passing short and sweet so he doesn't concede possession. Contrary to his description as a 'Playmaker' his role is better recreated as a Central Midfielder with an Attack Duty.

When I have an Attacking Man I always like to balance him out with a deeper player. My role model for this role is that of Paul Scholes/Michael Carrick of Man Utd. They Both look to stay deeper and dictate the teams tempo with probing passes and great movement. So I made my RCM a Deep Lying Playmaker on Defend.

I've found this the best way of getting a team to play How I want. And I hope it helps all of you too.

Tactics I've created this way tend to be successful too :D
