I have the best tactics in the making (2-8-0 with real) and midway thru my project it breaks down.

Any settings i can use to lower cpu usage from FM? (It happens ONLY when playing FM, i installed other games to test it)

turn off all other downloads, not needed programs, reduce the 3d view, get a cooler, clean your fans and old files

what CPU usage is your CPU at while running football manager ? If its nearing 100% it will mean your laptop is at the lowend of the SPEC needed to run football manager effectively, as your CPU is working its balls off.

For it to shut down its an overheating issue, make sure when you play it the airflow is no obstructed (dont play on a bed for example).
An old PC i had on my windowsill with window open a jar to keep ambient temp low, it worked well until I upgraded my cooler

I am also using laptop to play that, and the temperature is ok.
I think maybe your laptop too old.
You can try to set all option to lowest and turn off all other program......

I would also recommend lowering the Maximum Processor State, I reduced mine from 100% down to 65% and I no longer have this issue of overheating, although FM will run a little slower. As above, playing matches in 2D helps as well. You could also play with a smaller database. If you're testing tactics and holidaying through a season to see the results that will probably fry the laptop, happened to me in FM13, I couldn't holiday longer than a few days.

I used to have this problem all the time until I found out that reason for this was dust on the fan, causing my laptop to overheat. Hopefully your problem is only this. I'd only had my laptop for about 8 months before all the overheating problems.

The key thing is to get a can of compressed air, preferably with a straw to target certain areas. You take the battery and cable out (so the air doesn't damage anything), then spray the compressed air through the grills on the back and side, making sure the dust can exit through the other grates, and your fans should now be much less prone to overheating.
