In an effort to regain my love for the Football manager series, I've gone back to what got me really interested in playing them to begin with. Making a story out of a game that is meant to be your management story. So I can do this with the only team that I support.
Unlike the amazing Liverpool 5 year plan story, I'm not going to set this up like an interview at the start. As much as I like the layout for that thread, I don't want to be copying how that was done.
Squad Overview
Goal Keepers:
Mignolet, Jones, Fulton
Defenders:
Moreno, Enrique, Lovren. Skrtel, Sakho, Toure, Jones, Flannagan, Johnson, Manquillo
Midfield:
Gerrard, Lucas, Can, Henderson, Allen, Lallana, Coutinho, Suso, Sterling, Markovic
Forward Line:
Sterling, Coutinho, Lallana, Suso, Borini, Markovic, Sturridge, Balotelli, Lambert,
Strengths and Weaknesses:
I'll start with the strengths of the team first, since there's a lot more of then than anything else. On paper the back line looks like it should be good enough to keep be in a good position throughout the season, Strong wingbacks with Moreno and Flannagan with how he played last season, as well as central defenders who are comfortable with the ball at their feet, as well as no nonsense defenders like Skrtel; something that is needed for how I'll want Liverpool to play.
The midfield are forward line are Liverpool's biggest strengths in this game, instead of breaking it into separate positions I put them altogether, just to show the variety that is in the team for this years' version of the game. Each player can play in at least two different positions which is good if I need to change my formation, and as well as for the rotation that will be needed during the course of a long season. This is seen mostly in Sterling, Markovic, Lallana, Countinho and Suso, they can play at the tip of a diamond in a 4-1-2-1-2, or across the front three in a 4-3-3 which will be my mostly used formation. Can, Henderson and Gerrard are other players who can do a job in other positions throughout the season, but with them not having the attributes this will likely be a last choice situation.
Now for the weaknesses of the team. I'm not happy with the Keeper situation at the club, Mignolet doesn't strike me as a top goal keeper in this game, despite his star rating that he's been given. It doesn't help that there isn't any real competition at the club for him, Jones and Fulton neither have the ability or the potential to challenge him for a long term spot. For now I'll leave this, but depending on how the season goes I might dip into the transfer market in January.
Enrique, Johnson, Toure, Gerrard, Sturridge. Some of these players have been placed in the strength section as well as at the end of the weakness section too, and there's a reason for this. These five players have something in common with each other but not everything; Ability, Age, Injury Proneness and Wage. If Sturridge wasn't injury prone than he wouldn't have been included in this list, but when I can he'll be my first choice striker, which will likely not happen as much as I want. The other four players fall into the other categories, nearing the end of their careers, won't go too long without an injury and realistically on too much money to be able to negotiate them down to a second year. Over the season, bar Sturridge, they'll be fazed out and moved on next season.
Young Players to look out for:
Jones, Rossiter, Ojo, Wilson, Sinclair,
