Been tinkering around at my 2nd season with Fiorentina, trying to make some sort of tactic on my own for a change..easier said than done XD
But it's actually working out quite well, I'm doing very well defensively closing up shop pretty well only letting them to a very few shots. Usually they are at 0-2 shots at half time, usually off target. So far I've managed to come out with wins in all matches 3-1, 3-0, 2-1, 2-0 and 2-1, only conceding to set pieces (I'm rubbish at tinkering with set pieces:'(). We are making some very very beautiful looking movements on the field. But I also think I've been a little lucky with a few of my wins due to scoring on set pieces rather than ccc's which I really struggle to create. Also the amount of key passes is extremely low..averaging on 3 per game. I assume that if I can improve my key passing it should also help out creating more ccc's.

If anyone has any suggestions to how I could improve key passing without having to sacrifice movement too much it would be great! I hope this screenshot is helpful..I could screenshot every player instructions if required, just thought it would be a bit many screenshots :$

Let me start with the tempo. It has to be lower in order to "be more expressive". U need 7-10 players with 16 plus creativity rating to execute clever passes at a higher tempo. A lower tempo makes a lot of sense because it gives the midfielders time to think and play killer passes. The shadow strikers work hard and push for the final third ending up being the goal scoring threats. Now, there is no one from the midfield to play key passes which you want. Try changing one CM to a playmaker. I understand that the false 9 does drop deep and tries to find passes, but an attack initiator from a deeper position might help a lot.

My creativity is quite decent, but not as much as I had hoped I guess =) Followed your advice and saw an improvement. 0-0 vs Tottenham in the CL but am quite happy since they dominated me through most of the game but I still managed to pull off 3 ccc's and 7 key passes during the few times I managed to be the attacking side. Thanks for the tip!

Glad it helped, mate. Play a few more matches and post results and train the SS for finishing(heavy). They might bang in a lot more and use a playmaker who distributes. I loved what you have done with the front line btw.

Thanks! Interested to see if it's gonna keep winning me games. Only had time for 1 game more on this computer, here's hoping steam cloud is working properly so I can keep testing on my laptop during the holidays.
3-0 vs Sassuolo, despite the result it was a pretty weak game. Scored 1 from pen and 1 from corner. Didn't really create a lot of ccc's and only 3 key passes and defensively was the worst so far this season. But I did rest half my first team and the tactic isn't nearly fluid yet so a few let-offs are bound to happen.

But do you know what it is with this guy? He is making so many runs past opponents..17 times during one match is pretty good, I assume? What is making him so good at this? Acceleration and pace obviously a part of it, but my other cwb also has the same acc and pace as this guy but is not nearly as effective. I might consider looking into a new left sided cwb to make it more pair on both sides.

Check out Corchia's PPM. "Knock the ball past opponent" or "take on opponents"(somethin' like that) might be there. So darting past opponents is player specific, I believe. I had him last year(FM 13) on my Monaco save and he was a world class right back after 6 years of play.

Check out his information page. You' ll find PPMs in the bottom right corner.

Sassuolo are not a very bad team, btw. Even if its lucky, 3-0 away win was good, I'd say. Was checking Klippy's Sassuolo save and he was 2nd in Serie A. I know its different when its a human manager, but they had some decent players already.

shorter passing would suit a more defensive strategy...if your aim is to play through defence, you should generally play wider and exploit the middle...everything else seems ok...

Yeah, was one of the teams I struggled most against in the first season..one of the hardest defences to get through.

Most of my players are instructed individually to do short passes, with some of the more creative midfields doing direct passes, dunno if I should do direct with the creative ones or not though.

Will test some more later. Cloud saving did not work but think I might have gotten it on my usb, if not I'll just test it with Arsenal since that's pretty much the only team I know the players from =P Thanks for the feedback =)

so, an update..I think after a series of games I've come to a setup I feel slightly more comfortable with. I still feel like I rely to much on set pieces but hey, if it works it works =) I'm currently unbeaten in my 10 first matches and are currently on 5 games in a row clean sheets. This is much much better than what I could ever imagine when I started working on it. So I think I'll stick with the current setup, try to work on making set pieces more deadly and see if I can start creating more key passes and ccc's if I just let my players get a little fluent with the current tactic. Thanks again for your suggestions!

I use the same formation but with slightly different roles. So far it's quite inconsitet. Do you use any specific player instructions?

it seems inconsistent on scoring goals, but that is mostly due to the fact that it creates little ccc's. It is very consistent defending though. With my current testing at 15 games so far I have 12 wins, 3 draws 0 losses and 11 clean sheets.
player roles I am currently using..
throw out and pass small for sweeper keeper
Pass it shorter and ease off on tackles on central defenders
Shoot less often, tackle harder, get forward, sit narrower, cut inside, cross less and direct passes for cwb's
Shoot less, get forward and direct passes for cm
Roam and direct passes for ap
Roam, shoot less often, run wide and move into channels for ss'
Shoot less often, roam and direct passes for f9.

Probably gonna test some more with player instructions as well

I have bigger problem with defending than scoring goals ;) My team struggle a lot to end with a clean sheet. I'm gonna test your instructions on defenders. At first I also used two shadow strikers but found out that it doesn't work well and now I use AM attack and SS and it's more or less better, especially the AM plays brilliantly.

I might try that, what average ccc's and key passes do you usually have?
On defending I find that ticking D-line and tempo down one tick usually help me get back in control of the game if my opponent starts running me over.

Lachirma, SS should not shoot less, mate. They are the major attacking threat in the team. Try removing that instruction.
