Hi All, I have played football manager for a number of years now and always go Newcastle, however I do tend to go for a lower league team and try to get them promoted, but I get loads of free players change the squad lose loads and get sacked.I would like to know if you have any tips on the following:- How do I know my best team? Do I pick standard formations or go for any formation? To find the best players for the team?Any help would be great

I always find that free transfers and loans are the best way to go for Lower League Managers (LLM). Very rarely buy players when I'm in League Two and below.

One of my earlier failings at this level was always trying to sign youth players on loan from Premier league clubs but they rarely succeed because they aren't mature enough or don't want to come. The best way to do it is aim for loan signings from the reserve teams of the division above. Maybe when you get to League one you can aim for old players from Premier reserve teams.

Have a look through the forums for LLM guides and also Google it, there's dedicated sites to LLM and all its joys, just remember to come back to FM-Base :)

My best ever save was on FM12 (best FM ever) with Plymouth Argyle when they were in financial peril. Went from foot of League Two to Europe in 8 years and then continued for another 7 or 8 years until I'd established them as constant title challengers in the Premier League.

Also the thing about formations is looking at the players in the team and preferred positions (Assistant Manager is pure gold at LLM level). If he informs you 4-3-1-2 is the best formation play the first season in that formation and slowly build up a tactic you want with your players you bring in (i.e train the team to the third tactic and set the youths and reserves playing that formation) and when you have your own new players in change the first team style of play.

Hope this helps! Makes me fancy trying Plymouth again :)

Hi,
Long time reader rarely post but I can add my opinions to this.

Always manage lower league and only time i am in top leagues is if I'm promoted there or get a offer I can't refuse.

Just a few tips that have not been mentioned.

1) don't sign too many new players because

A) it will take them long enough to learn your new styles without having to learn each other
B) too many players can be a massive drain on finances an you will find it is hard to move players on.

2) be careful what clauses you agree to when you sign a player. Yearly wage rises a definite no-no in my opinion 2 years down line you could still be LL you DONT want a player on 6 - 7 k wages.

3) simple formations are the best in my opinion, don't forget your players are not work beaters some are probably even part time don't expect them to learn advanced playmaker roles etc etc.
4-4-2 or 4-5-1 seem to work best.

5) or perhaps 4b) stick with maybe two tactics don't keep swapping and changing it never helps

6) if you don't get mega fed up!!!! Attend press conferences and big up the game it will raise moral and it will have a positive affect on the game.

There's a few more but you have managed Newcastle!!!! I'm sure you can manage LL you don't need my tips. Pardew wouldn't take advise from me :P unfortunately haha

In all seriousness I hope this helps

And I want to apologise if anything is spelt wrong or doesn't make sense I'm on my phone and I'm dyslexic haha
