Last season Manchester United only won one trophy and that was the Carling Cup. They finished 2nd in the Premier League just behind Chelsea, were knocked out of the FA Cup in the 3rd round by Leeds and knocked out in the Champions League Quarter Finals, by eventual finalists Bayern Munich. All in all it was not a very successful season and many pundits believe that this trend will continue, unless Manchester United spend heavily which is unlikely as they have a great amount of debt at the moment. This summer have brought in Chris Smalling, Javier Hernandez and Bebe, with Anders Lindegaard coming in January. Now Sir Alex Ferguson has made a bold statement which many people believe shows signs of him cracking up and losing his mind.
Sir Alex said:Before I retire I am going to win everything there is in one season and buy no players doing so. We have a great youth setup here and we are going to use that to my benefit. I am going to win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield, World Club Championships and Super Cup all in one season with the squad that I have and any youngsters that come through. I know I can not do that this season as we aren't in all of them competitions but before I retire I am going to win the Septuple without buying any more players. Many of you will think that there is no way that can happen but trust me it will. People wrote me off when I introduced the likes of Gary and Phil Nevile, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham into the squad and look what happened then. Soon Gary, Ryan and Paul will be retiring but we have players to cover that. Rafael is already quite capable of playing right back and I see him being the right back for many years to come, we have Tom Cleverly who is on loan at WIgan this season who I think is a ready made replacement for Ryan and the Premier League he gets this year will stand him in good stead of next year. Regarding Paul we have Darren Gibson who is a similar type of player to him, and in the youngsters we have Matt James and Paul Pogba who can play there. This is going to be one of the hardest tasks in my managerial career but one that I can not wait to take on. I am going to be using a lot of the the youngsters this season to give them match experience, but some of them are out on loan which will also help us in the long run. I am confident though that before I retire I will achieve this goal.
The test begins when Manchester United face Chelsea in the Community Shield and Sir Alex will be able to judge then whether this is one step too much.
