Manager notebook. What is Burgos
- By Ezequiel Valls
As it turned out, there was another Ezequiel Valls and the japanese job wasn't for me. however I was offered the position for my hometown team. Burgos CF currently laying in Tercera División, after past year's failure to promote.
Before starting with the reports, some history is in order.
Originally Gimnástica Burgalesa, the team enjoyed a run in the top division during the fifites and the name Burgos CF, not doing bad. Until they dropped and spent a long period in 2ªB, where the were named Burgos Promesas until 1983 (actually was the reserve team renamed and main disappear due to debts), when changed name to Real Burgos. From there they emerged to reach Primera with a small budget after the 89/90 season.
Once in the top spanish division they marked some decent season with middle table position and getting draws and wins against the big teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid, better at home thanks to the very cold clomate of Burgos, where you can find 4ºC during... August, every year at least a day, and no more than fifteen days above 32ºC.
Then at their third year, after a huge lot of drawns and a invalidated legal goal in the last match that would have given the victory, the team lost the category. But, since some taxes had been left without payment, were punished to go down to 2B. The team disolved and in season 94/95 was refunded as Burgos CF.
Played in the season 01/02 in 2ªA, with a magnificent first leg and a **** poor second, ending the first third and the the second sixteenth.
And the directive showed the biggest three stooges play (apart from the pitch using hard paper scoreboards). They wanted to gain promotion next season. They spent 400 millions of pesetas signing four ex-Primera players, taken from relegated teams.
One week after, the deadline to become SAD, needed to play above 2ªB expired. One month after, the LFP sentenced that since Burgos didn't pay the 400M pesetas needed to become SAD (the same used to sign the four star players) the team was to be relegated to 2ªB.
If that wasn't enough:
- The four star players said they had signed for a 2ªA team with promises of promotion in a year, not a 2ªB. They called invalid their contracts.
- The usual starting eleven players said they didn't want to ever return to play 2ªB, they left.
- Everyone else followed suit.
- Only two seventeen years old stayed, because they saw their big chance to play in the starting XI.
- The coach I think followed the majority suit and left, angry as everyone.
- Mirandés, the feeder club, said they would not be feeders for such pathetic team and broke ties, looking for another parent club.
Team had to be rebuilt. First 2ªB season was tough but they survived to link a series of qualifitacions for promotion play offs they lost, until 06/07 that lost in the final's second leg extra time to Sevilla Atlético. The next 07/08 they went down to Tercera.
In 08/09 they were first of their group with four matches to go. Apparently they decided to rest the key players to be fit for promotion play offs and with four straight drawns dropped to third. Hence losing the chance of being promoted by winning just one two legged phase against other group champions, having to then win three two leffed phases. Of which they won the first, but lost the second with a 0-1 at home and 1-0 away, for a global 0-2.
Now we're on the second season in Tercera División, with most of the team that performed so well until four matches were left of the regular season. A team that lately distinguishes for the difficulty to score and that has been piling ridicule after ridicule.
