Curious if anyone else has ever had this issue.

I had a top player who was making noises about "wanting a bigger club." I told him I'd list him in the next transfer window, i.e., the start of next season. My promise then showed up in his Personal profile, per normal, and sat there for two months, including the season break.

In the meantime, I found and signed an expensive replacement for him, banking on the coming transfer funds. So the new season starts, the transfer window arrives, and lo and behold -- the "manager promises" line in his profile is suddenly empty, and he's simply "enjoying playing for the club" once again.

I don't know if it's a bug in the game, or if it's just something that can happen with a flighty player. Does a "promise" just drop away after some period of time?

(Now I'm stuck deciding whether to go ahead and transfer-list this player, upsetting team morale along with fan and board confidence. It's either that or suck it up, pay his wages, and be stuck with two high-quality central AMs who will eat into each other's playing time. Gggrrrr.)

umm consider this as the Trevez scenario, he first said he hate Manchester, then in th middle of the season, be lauds as 'im happy' then at the end, again it comes saying 'f*ck Manchester' (6)

pretty similar, but i dont think this is a problem at all, considering u are playing him every week. and yes the manger promises does go away either by a long period of time, were the player has been playing well, or until the demands are deal done.

what team are u managing, and which club came after him.

i also had this scenario, and barca is a *****, eheh, tapping into my players. they came in with an offer for my other good CM, and i rejected it, and then just like u, he says i wanna have a new challenge, then in the winter time, i go to his profile and check, he says he's happy. :P Happy days!

I'm managing as New York in MLS, which has a pretty big budget for an American team.

No club came after the player, because I never actually got him transfer listed. I just promised I'd do it in the next window, which was about two months away. By the time the season break ended and the window began, my manager promise was gone and he was no longer unhappy at the club.

Weird. I can understand him being fickle and changing his mind, like you're describing with Tevez. What I don't understand is why my "promise" would disappear on its own, without anything ever happening. But like you say, maybe it just goes away after some period of time. And since much of that time was during the offseason, while the player was on holiday, perhaps I never got to see him being "angry" about the "broken promise."

u know, if the player is currently happy atm, then keep him. but if any offers come from him, then just accept it.

Well you shouldn't have replaced him before selling him! Silly decision.

Haha, well, this guy is an £8 million 26-year-old attacking midfielder, with a constant stream of enquiries about his availability. So I knew I could easily sell him off. What I didn't count on is that the Football Manager software would abruptly erase my "promise" and thus transform any sale from beneficial to harmful.

In real life, that promise -- and expectation -- wouldn't have just slipped away into the ether as if it never existed...

True, but FM isn't real life. And besides, there was more than likely a point where you received a news item saying 'Player happy to stay' which could be because of your success on the field or because sometimes they randomly decide they want to stay.

And if he's so easy to sell then why not just sell him?

"And if he's so easy to sell then why not just sell him?"

Well, I probably will. But it's annoying for the reasons I listed above: He's well-liked, and so it will be a disruption of team morale, fan confidence, etc. If the player were still unhappy and asking to be transferred, that would be one thing. But just ditching him out of nowhere -- which is how the game's AI will now interpret it -- will taint my club's atmosphere at a time I don't need that.

"True, but FM isn't real life."

Right, but it's supposed to mimic real life. And anyway, that's the whole reason I started the thread -- to learn if this IS some quirky trait of the game itself.

Either way, sorry, I didn't intend to make a mountain out of a molehill here. This is ultimately a minor issue. It was just something I was curious about... and don't we all love expounding on the drama of our save-games when we have the chance?! :D

You missed the main point I was trying to make. Are you 100% sure that you didn't receive a message saying that your player is happy to stay? This happens a lot in the game.

Positive. (I'm so neurotic about my inbox and other details, it can take me hours just to work through a couple of weeks of the game.)

If there's any legitimate explanation here, I suspect it involves the season break. Perhaps I would have gotten a message like that, or just some kind of sign from the player, if he'd actually been around rather than "away" on his off-season holiday.
