The last FM I had was 2007 and one of my best saves saw me manage Chivas USA in the MLS.
The MLS works very differently from the European leagues but I did really enjoy the different style of management.
However, the draft system, which I liked at first, becomes confusing and player registration became frustrating with all the rules and regulations- many times I signed very decent players but then lost them for nothing as I couldn't register them within the rules of the MLS.

Has anyone started an MLS save on FM2010?
Do you find it different from managing in, say, the English, German or Spanish leagues?

i did a san jose earthquakes game, americans have too many rules and regulations, like the draft??? what the **** is that about, i see the idea in it, seems stupid to me though

Yeah same as Joe, I started as Seattle Sounders though (they got Freddy Ljungberg and some young Colombian kid called Johhny Montero). But yeah far too rules and stuff and I only lasted 3 months.

The draft is really only good for the NBA and NFL. It helps keep parity among the teams. It doesn't have too much use in Major League Baseball.

I guess its sort of a form of communism lol.

I remember managing on one of ther earlier FM games in the MLS. Thats when they had the 35 yard shootout if games were drawn. Never did try it again on any of the recent FM's. Might make a league in the editor which makes the MLS more in line with the rest of the world.

i might have to give the MLS a try when i finish my Enfield town story

I felt the draft system was extremely confusing on the last game . Didn't understand it much . Ended up leaving that game and creating a new one.

what you can do is use my latest file, Nick134's American Database, where all the crazy rules have gone

Sorry to bump this thread but just about to start a game with New York Red Bulls could someone tell me how the mls works please

Basically you have the Eastern and Western Conferences, with eight teams in each.Throughout the season, you and 7 other teams will compete against each other in a season to see who will top each other to face the winner of the opposing conference, that will then result in a championship playoff and declare the winner of the MLS.

There is also a side competition in the shape of the U.S. Cup and also the American Champions League, not sure how that comes in though. Before the season starts, there is a draft to find young talent and to add to the squad before the season commences.I don't know how that works but it's a process in which finds talent from college soccer and puts them with teams in the MLS.

Hope this helps someway. :)

the draft is a way of making it so there isnt always the same team that wins and the same team that always loses. In theory it makes it good as there is more competition and the same teams dont always win (like in the European leagues). The bad side is exactly what you have said. It can be confusing and also the hard work you do to find good players can be totally undone which is very frustrating. I've never started an MLS game but I would be interested to do so.

Thats a great guide :D

Thanks for the help guys, Just thought I would give it a go since I have never done it before, Should be fun !

The Draft system is actually a brilliant idea because it results into each team having an increased chance of winning a championship. because if you draft a '' Michael Jordan '' in soccer then ofcourse that would make you a better team for next season, then you build up your squad by the talent you get/ can afford.

For Example. If Team A finished at the bottom last season, while Team B won the league, the most likely result is that Team A is going to get the 1st draft pick which means they are capable of choosing the BEST talent available from U.S Colleges in order to have a better season. So they are like rewarding the weaker teams and balancing the chances of each team winning the league.

The thing is, the higher you are on the draft pick order, you get to draft the best ones first while the teams after you in the order might get the shittier players.

Forgive my english since its not my main language. but yeah, hope this helped people wondering what the draft system is all about.<)

I don't really have any long term saves going yet, but I'm in my third season with the Galaxy. I personally love the draft system. The only problem I have with managing in the MLS in FM 2010 is the old designated player rule. You can have 3 now, and FM 2010 hasn't updated to reflect this yet.

Far too many rules....Football is a game best kept simple

The Draft system, in principle, is a fantastic idea. Unfortunately, I don't feel that SI have perfected it in FM yet, as there isn't the scope for trading picks, the odd 'bust' and/or drafting rumours in the build up. I really hope that the MLS is given more attention in FM11, it's potentially the most challenging and enjoyable league in the game! Wonder if they'll add teams in gradually, for example Portland are scheduled to join in 2014 if I remember rightly...

there is a databaser by joe i think that takes all the rules away but does it take the fun away?
