Chapter One:The Beginning

Manuel Muller was born on the 24/08/1977 in Munich, Germany to Dutch parents, Adriaan and Loes Muller. He was born into a soccer family, and his dad Adriaan was a former Professional football goalkeeper with AFC Ajax, and he made 28 caps for the Dutch National Football Team, keeping 16 clean sheets and appearing at one world cup. His mother was also the Assistant Chef at AFC Ajax at the same time, and thats how they met. Manuel was always expected to become a football great following his dad, and in a similar way became a goalkeeper, but at the DSC Arminia Bielfield football club in Germany. At the age of 18 he was the starting goalkeeper for Bielfield, and he helped the club secure promotion to the German Division after making 31 appearances and keeping 26 clean sheets in the German Regional Division (West). The following season at age 19 he helped Bielfield to a second consecutive promotion, this time to German First Division (Bundesliga), after finishing second in the Second Division. This time round Muller kept 22 clean sheets in 33 appearances. Halfway through the Bundesliga season the next year, Bielfield were sitting at the top of the table, and on the 25th of December they were playing German Legends Bayern Munchen. Bielfield took a 2-0 lead into halftime with Muller pulling of 8 fantastic saves, and then the Biefield outfield took two counter attacking opportunities. Then disaster struck, twelve minutes into the second half, Muller was involved in one of the worst Football disasters of all time. Muller made a low diving save to his left, the ball bobbled and a Bayern Munchen striker looked to pounce, he tried to get to the ball before Muller but Muller dived on it, but then the Bayern Munchen striker tried to jump over Muller, but couldn't and he landed studs first on Muller's head and neck. Blood flowed everywhere out of his neck, and he was knocked unconscious. Muller was taken to hospital, the game was called off, and the Munchen striker retired from football after not being able to live with what he did. Muller survived, but could never play football again after many nerves were damaged and he could just walk properly, let alone dive or run. Muller decended from fame after that, and everyone forgot about him. He kept a strong relationship with the Munchen striker, before moving to Amsterdam to put everything behind him at 27. Now 31 Muller planned to become a football manager, so that everyone could again remember his name.

Chapter Two: The Move, The Job, The New Life

So at 27 Manuel Muller moved to Amsterdam, and then 31 he was looking to reignite his football career, but not playing, managing. He completed the UEFA Pro Licence course and became eligible to be a football manager. No one at the course recognised Muller unfortunately, not a good start to becoming famous again. He bought a new apartment in Amsterdam Zuidoost, a borough of Amsterdam. He sent in applications to many local teams, but all were rejected due to lack of experience. Then a few days later on the 22/06/2009, shock struck Amsterdam when Martin Jol was sacked. He had been fighting with Chairman Uri Coronel about wages, transfer budgets and many more things, and Coronel had enough and sacked him. Muller applied straight away, with no hope of the job. If local teams wouldn't hire him, why would Ajax? Suprisingly Muller received a phone call from Coronel, he was one of the 3 finalists. Muller went to meet Coronel the next day, and saw Johann Cruyff and Ruud Gullit lining up with him. Muller was gutted to be up against these two legends. When he met Coronel he was suprised that Coronel knew him. He told him almost of Muller's own life story. Coronel then told Muller he was the job favourite because Ajax wanted a lower profile manager and that Muller's "youth" might be a good thing. The next thing Muller knew he was AFC Ajax manager and he was meeting the playing staff out on the training ground. Muller was on his way to becoming famous again.

Chapter Four: The EURO Cup Dream

UEFAEuropaLeague1.jpg

The season Muller came into Ajax, their continental competition was the EURO Cup, not the Champions Cup. Muller was disappointed by this and said:

A club of Ajax's standard should definatley be in the Champions Cup, not the EURO Cup, maybe this is part of the reason Mr. Martin Jol got sacked, we''ll never know, but what I intend to do, is to win the EURO Cup this year, then go on and play Champions Cup football next year.

Muller's team got off to a good start, by qualifying for the EURO Cup Group Stage. Ajax got there through a 5-1 aggregate win over Kalmar FF, with 2 goals to Nicolas Lodeiro and Urby Emanuelson and one goal to Ismael Aissati. Unfortunatley left back Aleksandar Lukovic was injured in the first leg, and was on the sidelines for 4 weeks. Ajax were drawn with Aston Villa, Sparta Prague and Metalurg D in the EURO Cup Group Stage.

Chapter Five: The Three Month Hump - October 1st 2010

Three months into their job, most new managers crack under pressure, resign and never get to finish telling their story. When Manuel Muller made it past 3 months, Ajax looked a great side, scoring goals for fun, conceding once every two or three games. Ajax looked the best they had in years.

Team Competitions:

Eredevisie
1. NAC Breda (8 Games - 16 Points)
2. AFC Ajax (8 Games - 15 Points)
3. PSV (7 Games - 13 Points)

EURO Cup
1. Aston Villa (1 Game - 3 Points)
2. AFC Ajax (1 Game - 3 Points)
3. Sparta Prague (1 Game - 0 Points)
4. Metalurg D (1 Game - 0 Points

Dutch Cup
2nd Round - AFC Ajax 2-1 FC Oss

Team Stats:

Top Scorer
1st. Nicolas Lodeiro - 5 Goals (11 Games)
- Luis Suarez - 5 Goals (7 Games)
- Ismael Aissati - 5 Goals (8 Games)

Top Assists
1st. Marko Pantelic - 4 Assists (5 Games)
2nd. Luis Suarez - 3 Assists (7 Games)
- Rob Wielaert - 3 Assists (12 Games)

Highest Average Rating
1st. Luis Suarez - 7.64 (7 Games)
2nd. Ismael Aissati - 7.60 (8 Games)
3rd. George Ogaragu - 7.50 (1 Game)

This Ajax team was the first in years that looked like a Championship winning team, maybe it was the new tactics, the team harmony or just luck?

Chapter Six: The Star of the Future?

On Tuesday 6th October 2009, Ze Eduardo, an all around midfielder on loan at Ajax, completed a full signing for 1.4 million pounds. Ze Eduardo had spent 3 months and a bit on loan at Ajax from Maga (SC) before Muller decided to make the move to own Eduardo outright. Ze Eduardo was 18 at the time, and already almost as good as the first team, he looked like a signing not only for the future, but for the present.

Chapter Seven: The Injury

On the 17th October 2009 AFC Ajax star Ismail Aissati was struck with injury during a 0-0 draw with Willem II. The injury was a result of the crowded box from a corner in the dying seconds. While jumping for a header Aissati pulled a hamstring, and had to limp off for treatment. The injury was worse that once thought with the attacking midfielder put out for at least 3 weeks, and right when Ajax needed him, before a EURO Cup game vs Aston Villa. Could Ajax cope without Aissati, or would Villa take full advantage and come away with the victory?

Manuel Muller's Comments
To concede two goals in the whole group stage is amazing, and we will be looking to keep this strong defensive base throughout the knockout rounds.

Eleven years on and Manuel was much happier, sitting third in the Eredivise with a game in hand, still in the Dutch Cup and EURO Cup, and his team was performing great, gelling well, and everyone was enjoying there season, except for Eyong Enoh, who suffered a broken leg in training, and was sidelined for seven months.
