The Journey Begins

Hello, my name is Mason Valderrama and as my name suggests this goof is my father:

During 1994 Carlos got busy with a young English lady called Joanne and 9 months later, a footballer in training was born. I quickly became a sensation in my home country and many believed I was destined to follow in my fathers glorious footsteps and become a footballing and hair styling god however this was not to be. When I was 15 I was in a horrible chip pan fire accident caused by my father and that was that, my dream was seemingly over. I was told I would never be able to run properly again and therefore I was never going to become another Blonde Afro, necklace wearing playmaker like him.

At this point my mother suggested I look into coaching so that I could do something in the game I love, I quickly realised that I was actually much better suited to this side of the game and decided that I wanted to go to the top, or at least near the top.

In the summer of 2015 something magical happened, out of nowhere seemingly with no previous managerial experience I got the opportunity I was dreaming of, a chance to manage a top-flight club and not just any club but a GOOD club, Celta Vigo to be exact.

It was at this point with the opportunity I had been given that I realised my life's true calling was to bring Celta to the very top of the game but to also instill my beliefs and passions of youth development and exciting football but with a solid defensive foundation.

And so it begins...

Unfortunately I didn't think of doing this as a story until after my first season so that will all be in one post next, a quick summary then I'll get onto the real story from season 2 onwards!

So in my first full season in charge of Celta my aim was to finish somewhere in the top 8, however I was really hoping to secure some kind of European football for next season to give us more financial power so I could attract some better players. I still managed to sign a few players in the summer though

Romero and David jumped straight into my team while the other 3 are good youngsters for the future, Victor Andrade could potentially be a star but I don't think I have much chance of getting him permanently from Benfica unfortunately. Romagna came in because we desperately needed CB cover. I signed Borja because I only had 3 FBs in the entire squad and although Jonny can play both sides naturally I felt a bit of depth was necessary in case he or Hugo Mallo got injured during the season.

Obviously a few players left too:

Although Augusto was our club captain I didn't feel he would be good enough in the long haul for us and having already agreed deals for Romero and David I needed the money. It's a similar story for Fabián, I prefer Daniel Wass as our RW and I simply needed the money so when Monaco came asking I happily sold. Nothing really to say on the other 2, they just weren't good enough for us.

So with these signings I wasn't expecting too much in the first season however a bit of the Valderrama family magic seemed to rub off on the squad and we were superb!

Only 1 defeat until the start of February! We shouldn't have lost that game either as Villarreal were in terrible form at the time so realistically we could have gone half the season unbeaten which would have been well beyond my wildest expectations. Our defence led by Andreu Fontas was amazing, all 3 FBs were impeccable and our front 3 of Nolito, Iago aspas and Daniel Wass were scoring a lot of goals for us so everything seemed brilliant at this point however the January transfer window brought some blows in terms of outgoings:

View attachment 214505
We lost our second club captain in the space of half a season as Gustavo asked to return home to Argentina, he was battling with Sergi Gomez to be first choice CB alongside Andreu and was losing the battle to Sergi to be fair but it's still a blow as we are a young squad and his experience and leadership helped in the dressing room.

Guidetti was just a moaning machine, every week he complained to me and by January I was sick of it so I just wanted to get rid, Leverkusen quickly came in and because we got him on a free I nearly tore their hand off when they offered £7M! All profit and he was barely playing, you can't get much better than that.

The big one was Andreu though, we had just negotiated a new contract with a £60M release clause in as I was planning on making him my defensive cornerstone for years to come when Lazio came in, offered him much more money than we could and he chose them over us. This is a major problem we seem to have as a club as many of our players are on very low release clauses, Nolito our star player being one however he wants £100k a week for a new contract and that'd be more than a quarter of our total budget! I'm amazed noone came in for him but I'm sure he'll go in the summer.

With a little bit of money to play with I made 3 signings:

Zach Clough is our future, I play with a false 9 and this kid will be the best in the world at that soon enough, he's already a good player and backing up Iago for a season or two will only do him good long term, he's our backup striker with Guidetti gone and I plan on giving him much much more game time than John ever got.

When Andreu departed I had to act quick and young Jairo at Ajax looks a brilliant prospect in a similar Ball-Playing Defender role to what Andreu did. He cost a fair bit, breaking our transfer record but to get the best you have to pay the money.

During January we lost both of my DMs to long term injury so just to shore things up I snapped up José on a quick 6 month loan, he has great potential but AC wanted over £30M for him! So a loan deal will have to do for now.

In the second half of the season things were a bit tougher, over December and January we had a lot of cup fixtures and we did quite well actually:

We didn't deserve to lose to Barca, we were far superior to them in both legs but their quality in front of goal ended up telling as Suarez netted a hat trick to bring them from 2-0 down in the second leg to 3-2 up and into the final, a disappointment but since we only ever expected to reach the 5th round we outperformed ourselves and I am happy with that.

We did the same in the league:
View attachment 214499
Again we didn't deserve to lose to Barca but we had 3 games against them in a 2 week period to start February with Sevilla in the middle so I'll accept that. The one game we deserved to lose was at the Bernabeu, we got absolutely hammered and 5-2 does not do them justice, it could have been 50! Some great results including beating Atletico away on the final day meant we had an unbelievable season and surely we had European football?

View attachment 214497

We had! Not just European football but Champions League too!! Our final day win against Atletico means we don't even have to go through a dreaded play off to get into the group stage too. With the least defeats in the league and an attack rivaling that of the big 2 I can only applaud my players who were almost all magnificent all season long:

View attachment 214496

Some incredible performances from the lads all year round, our front 3 of Nolito, Aspas and Wass combined for an amazing 45 goals and 39 assists and of our first choice back 4 Hugo, Jonny and Sergi all got stunning average ratings.

However there can only be 1 player of the year:
View attachment 214495 View attachment 214494

For me Nolito has been an absolute star, his goals, assists and average rating speak for themselves but he has also had one of the highest pass completions on the team despite being a major creator and scorer. Such a shame as in all likelihood we won't be able to hold onto him due to his £12.75M release clause and refusal to even discuss a contract under 100k a week..

I think we're also going to lose Iago and Hugo too as Real Madrid want Iago and everyone seems to want Hugo.

Our young player of the year from me goes to:
View attachment 214493

Jonny, the boy wonder, I'm hoping he'll stay here forever but rumours of Manchester City being interested keep persistently popping up unfortunately, I won't accept less than £20M for him though.

I also won Manager of the Year!
View attachment 214492

This is a huge honour for me as I never expected things to go so well so quickly but that's football!

As a club we were named the most improved in the country and the end of season awards and review also happened:
View attachment 214491 View attachment 214490View attachment 214489

From the team of the season one name stands out to me, Pino, he's a young Advanced Playmaker who came on so strongly in the second half of the season and figures to be a key player for us going forward, especially since he's a local lad. And although I can agree with the choice of Hugo as player of the year I still think Nolito was a cut above the rest of our team.

So that's that for the first season, I'll get onto regular updates from tomorrow!

Summer 2016

Would we be able to keep star man Nolito despite his tiny release clause?

So I went into the summer of 2016 expecting to take some heavy losses in terms of my squad as most of Europe's big boys were sniffing around most of our team! However what happened was both better and worse than I expected in terms of outgoings, here's who unfortunately left the club:

View attachment 214087

So what was better was that we got rid of a lot of the dead weight we had like Pablo Hernandez, the consistently under-performing Radoja, Iglesias who shouldn't have been anywhere near our squad in the first place and Madinda who only really player because Mauri turned out to be so sh*t for me.

We also managed to send Pape and Dejan to clubs where they will get significant game time so I can judge whether they'll be good enough when they get back although I can recall both at any point in case a crisis hits us.

What was worse was pretty much everything else...

I wanted more for Sergio as he was our first choice keeper but with Ruben Blanco and Ivan Villar coming through and with much better potential than Sergio I felt it was right to sell him even for a low price.

The losses of Jonny and Hugo are huge, although I expected Hugo to leave I thought I'd be able to price people out of the market for Jonny but Man City were just too persistent and eventually, after he complained, I finally relented and let Jonny go where he wanted to be. If I ever get a huge cash injection he will be the first player I look at signing as he is simply brilliant and he can play both right and left back naturally. Hugo as I said was an expected loss however it was nonetheless upsetting as he was due to become our new captain with Sergio gone. The one positive is that this will give Borja plenty of game time as our new first choice RB and he looks like he could be a future captain.

Despite Real Madrid coming in for him repeatedly I sold Iago to Lazio as Real just didn't offer us enough money whereas 4 or 5 Serie A clubs did. £13.5M is up front with the other £6.5M coming over 12 months, I feel this was a good deal for both sides as he wanted to leave as soon as he heard of outside interest, I wanted to make Zach Clough first choice this season and personally, although he did do exceptional last season, I just don't feel Iago is a £20M player to be perfectly honest.

The biggest blow was Nolito, just as it seemed he was going to stay and maybe negotiate a new contract Man Utd came in, paid his release clause and offered him £100k a week which we just can't compete with. It is a shame as he was our star but it opens up the door massively for Theo Bongonda and a new signing to make a much bigger impact this season and down the line, Dejan will come into that position on the left wing too.

So with some big departures how did we repair?

View attachment 214086

Being from Colombia myself I wanted to bring someone from my country in and for such an absurdly tiny fee combined with huge potential I snapped up Jhon Arango before the window even opened. He may not play loads first season but he also might, it depends on his early performances and the other midfielder's form/fitness as to how much he will play as he is backup for now.

Although originally signed to backup both Zach and Nolito, Cristian Pavon is now battling for first choice on the left wing with Theo Bongonda, a battle which I think he will eventually win as I play an inside forward there which is Cristian's role whereas Theo is much more a winger being left footed. However Theo will start as first choice there due to his goal scoring last season.

Pepelu is our future Midfield anchor and will play as backup/rotation at first behind Lucas Romero, he is Spanish which is always a plus and very young so he can be moulded into whatever really. I very much look forward to seeing how he progresses with us.

I signed Jay on loan as backup to Carles Planas however as you can see I later signed Giuseppe Pezzella who is also a young LB so I felt it was unfair to keep Jay as I couldn't give him the games I promised and so I terminated his loan after Giuseppe's arrival. Giuseppe will be backup at first but Carles has a bad disciplinary record and constantly gets booked so that may not last long.

Alvaro came in primarily to replace what Victor Andrade brought us last season, cover on both wings. He could overtake Daniel Wass though as I do prefer to use Spanish players since we are a Spanish team and Daniel tailed off a little bit towards the end of last season anyways.

I brought in Javi Manquillo and Julio as backups for the season, nothing more however for such a low fee I had to get Julio permanently. Arsenal will regret letting him go I promise you that!

Iker Hernandez is my backup striker to Zach now too although again depending on performances he could become first choice but I find this unlikely as Zach has already developed tremendously and looks like he will be a world star soon enough.

Pre season was fairly average, we drew 2, lost 2 and won 3. The real stuff begins now!

Will continue tomorrow when I get home from work

At least you managed to get some good money for your youngsters, shame about Nolito but he's probably had his best days anyway! Some quality signings, Barca and Madrid won't know what'***** them!

Yea he probably had but it's a real shame because he is outrageously good, both in real life and on fm.

I'm disappointed I couldn't hold onto Jonny especially but like you say, at least I got good money for them all

Yelko Pino, a future superstar?

Sorry for the humongous delay, I've been really busy with my new job so haven't really had chance to either play FM or update this thread but I'm here again now so let's just get started with the results:

Celta Vigo 2 -1 Real Socidead (Liga BBVA)
Wass, Vadillo

A good win to start off the new season against a strong Sociedad team. We should be winning this game to be fair but sometimes early on in the season it takes a while to get going so a good start.

Eibar 0 - 1 Celta Vigo (Liga BBVA)
Clough m/pen, Clough

Despite missing a penalty Zach Clough got his first goal of the season and we beat Eibar at their own place. Again this is a game we should be winning so I can't get too excited.

At this point we got the draw for the Champions League and I have to say, we got a tough one:

Juventus
Dynamo Kiev
AS Monaco
Celta Vigo

We'll do well to qualify from that group, even in 3rd place for the Europa League.

Celta Vigo 3 - 0 Real Oviedo (Liga BBVA)
Vadillo, David, Clough

Another goal for both Vadillo and Clough who have both played well in all 3 games thus far, Vadillo particularly outperforming his backup squad status so far.

AS Monaco 8 - 0 Celta Vigo (UEFA Champions League Group C)

The less said about this the better, we got battered from pillar to post in my worst FM defeat ever.

Celta Vigo 3 - 1 Athletic Bilbao (Liga BBVA)
David, Romero, Wass. Romero Red Card

A good way to bounce back from the horror show in Monaco but disappointing to see Lucas Romero get sent off as he's probably our best player now after the summer departures.

Real Valladolid 0 - 2 Celta Vigo (Liga BBVA)
Pavon, Vadillo

Another solid victory in the league and we look on course so far to at least retain our top 4 spot from last season. Pavon got his first goal for us too which is good news as he see him as a major part of our future.

Getafe 0 -1 Celta Vigo (Liga BBVA)
Arango

6 wins from 6 now in the league and another new signing gets his first goal, Jhon Arango has already performed better than expected so to now get his first goal is great news

Celta Vigo 1 - 0 Dynamo Kiev (UEFA Champions League Group C)
Riedewald

This game looked destined to be a draw until in the 90th minute from a corner our Centre backs combined and Riedewald forced the ball home to give us a much needed victory, especially with games home and away against Juventus coming up which I expect to get a grand total of 0 points from.

Celta Vigo 3 - 0 FC Barcelona (Liga BBVA)
Vadillo, Arango, Bongonda

A huge victory for the club! We performed well against Barca last season in all 4 of our games but could never quite get over the line against them well today we did. Vadillo grabbed another goal to get us going and then 2 late goals from Arango and Bongonda sealed our incredible start to the season in the league.

League Table

View attachment 211520

Our perfect start to the season sees us as the early table leaders unsurprisingly, we have a nice 5 point lead already over Real although any slight slip up should see us caught quickly as I can't really see Barca or Real dropping too many points over the season.

Player of the Month
Borja San Emeterio

View attachment 211519

The young full back has come in after a season watching from the subs bench and been incredibly consistent. Averaging nearly 8 a game in the league he's been the 3rd best player behind Messi and Ronaldo so far in the entire country so he's the obvious choice as our best player over the period.
