matches are suddenly slow!

out of the blue i am playing football manager and into february the matches (i use the 2d view) have suddenly become really slow and erratic. it used to be really smooth gameplay but now the game stops/starts, total opposite of smooth and it takes forever to complete a match even though i have the game on key highlights only.

i restarted the pc just to be make sure but the problem persists...

can anyone help or know what to do?
