What role does mentality play in regards to whether or not one of your players passes around the box.

I have 2 similar players playing up front in somewhat similar roles. One as poacher with full attacking mentality, and one as complete forward support with just above 50% on mentality.

I have them swap position often.

In the last game, I changed my complete forward to full defensive mentality, and he made quite a few cut back passes as he charged through the box creating excellent chances. The poacher however, I have never seen make a cutback pass in the last few seasons that I've played him at full mentality.

This seems logical, but I always hear that PPMs and mental attributes are important. But could me as a manager telling the poacher to have maximum attacking role encourage him to shoot every time (which is pretty much what he does)? I had previously thought that mentality effected the vertical positioning of that player on the field.

A player with very high mentality only has one goal in mind. to score. the player will drive towards the goal, taking a shot majority of the time. the forward with a defensive mentality will only shoot if there is about a 75% chance of scoring thats why the player makes cut backs. high creative freedom for the poacher might make him make the cut back pass. not sure. you can test that.
