Bury Football Club
Founded in 1885, Bury are a professional English club currently playing in the Coca-Cola League 2. The club play their home games at Gigg Lane and possess adequate training facilities and an adequate youth setup. The club is affectionately known as The Shakers and retains a fierce rivalry with Bolton Wanderers and Rochdale.
The club enjoyed probably their best spell of success during the 1900’s. Although now enduring an twelve year barren spell, having not won a competition since 1997, The Shakers still have a history of which they can be justly proud. Bury won the FA Cup in 1900 and 1903, won the English 2nd Tier for the only time in 1895 and finished runners-up once, and won the English 3rd Tier in 1961 and 1997 and finished runners-up once.
Bury Chairman, Adam Harford has today confirmed that manager Alan Knill has departed with immediate effect. Knill said that the clubs failure to get promoted via the play-offs last season was his reason to depart and that the players lacked passion and commitment. Bury fans were upset at Knill’s decision and flooded the clubs message board to show their support for Knill. Also in the statement released by Hartford, he confirmed that Michael Henson, an ex-England international and Bury legend, would be given a one-year deal as manager with an option to extend it. Henson played for Bury for 6 years before being sold to Wigan Athletic for 250k in 2003. After his move to Wigan, he earned 43 England Caps and scored 8 goals. His career came to an abrupt end at the age of 28 when a shock tackle by Gary Jones in an FA Cup 2nd Round match broke his leg in three places forcing Henson to retire.
I am extremely pleased to be put in charge of my hometown club after I enjoyed several successful years as a player here. As I am in charge here for a year, I will try my best to get an improvement on my contract and meet the boards expectations to get into the playoffs.
Not much of a pre-season update
