Mourinho Style - Advice Required From FM Masterminds - Chelsea FC

Hi to all,

I have taken over Chelsea on the new update, so I am without Mata but have Matic and Salah and so on. I want to create a tactic that is extremely solid defensively (upmost importance), utilizes Eden Hazard, instructs all players to work hard shutting down and counter attacks effectively.

Away from home or in tough matches, I wish to be even more solid defensively and hit the opposition on the counter attack dangerously.

As as you can tell, SOLIDITY and HIGH WORK RATE TEAM are they keys. To therefore, not concede.

At home I use 4-2-3-1 and away I use 4-2-3-1 with two DM's.

Thus far, we haven't looked very solid and the clear cut chances number for the average-ability opposition is about 3-5 per game: too high. I'm using a balanced philosophy at home and a rigid philosophy away as that would make the team less likely to concede as they'd be more solid defensively, right? Or maybe I'm wrong, maybe I should go fluid as that will instruct all players to help out defensively; I need advice in that respect.

What is the best philosophy and player roles for my players to achieve the style I want to achieve?

Matic and Ramires are two key players for this type of tactic. I'm not sure what they should be either, as an anchorman may help defensively but also limits closing down.

Additionally, I have a ?20,000,000 budget so if you have an idea of who I should sign to help the tactic or aid a weak spot, such advice would be appreciated also.

(p.s this thread doesn't belong in the What Tactic Should I Use? thread as I don't want to download a tactic, and this thread promotes tactical discussion about how best to play the Mourinho way, rather than cry out for the new version of so-and-so's wonder tactic)

The "what tactic" thread is still for this sort of stuff btw. not just d/l recommendations.

BWM support might be your best best to hassle as well as step into midfield when the play is higher up.

Rigid does not mean you'll concede less. It just makes player do their roles and nothing else. If you have a defensive team set-up that will obviously be the result but if you have a lot of offensive roles it could possibly make your defense worse.

When playing a 4-2-3-1 you have to use fluid or very fluid philosophy in order for it to work properly in fm14. Otherwise your wingers and attacking midfielders will not help when defending. This actually fits perfectly with Mourinhos philosophies so it should definitely be used for your formations.

As Shyftyy also says a rigid strategy means that defenders defend and attackers attack. Using a fluid strategy means that all players particpate in both attack and defense.
 
4-2-3-1. GK, Fullbacks (defend), Centreback stopper and cover, two cms are deep-lying playmaker defend and ball winning midfielder support, right wing is inside forward support, left is inside forward attack, AMC is attacking midfielder support, striker is deep-lying forward attack but may bring in Mandzukic for higher work rate.

Fluid, Control, shorter passing, drill crosses, play narrower, hassle opponents, stay on feet, use tighter markings higher tempo, be more disciplined, push higher up.

What do I change because it currently isn't working..
 
you could try having a defensive deeper line so then you invite the opposition more into your half which can create more space for your attacking players and possibly outnumber the opposition

You should definetely add look for overlap to that strategy. With two inside forwards and narrow formation you fullbacks are your only players out wide. Also I would reconsider the deep-lying forward. you don't need him to come deep when you have an AMC and two inside forwards. Use a roaming poacher or advanced forward instead.

Those two things should help. You might also want to go to "very fluid".
 
It late i'm bored so had a go a creating my own chelsea tactic, gone for 4231

Flat back four - Complete Wing backs, on run wide and hug line. & CB Support/Cover
2 x DMC - Ball Winning support and Regista
2 inside forwards with roam. treq in centre with roam, (allow wide players to swap etc.)
Defensive Forward support (purley coz of the player i have)

look for overlap, run at defence, work ball in, Hassle, Direct Passing.

Counter, Fluid.


and a few other tweaks for player instructions etc... just saw the ball winnner tackle on the 18 yard box. team burst forwards, 4 passes one goal. BMW -> IF left, into the DF -> turns plays in the IF -> who slams home... lovely.

left than 25 passes per player in the first half. 4 goals. Needs more work, but thanks op for the inspiration..
 
I've taken your suggestions into account. I've managed to create a tactic that is very effective on the counter, beating FC Bayern 2-0 and Liverpool 3-0. However, I played FC Kobenhavn and Blackburn and because I said "much deeper" and "much higher tempo" I was squandering possession, then sitting at our own goal and inviting the weak opposition to have a go.

Additionally, Hazard has been woeful as an inside forward attack. I'm letting him roam, play more risky passes, get further forward, but he's not dangerous in the slightest to be honest.

maybe lose play risky passes as your pushing him further forward and he is only going to b able to play through balls to one person (st) or keep that and lose get further foward so he picks ball up deeper and choses to run with the ball or play through balls
