In my team I have Van Der Vaart and Balotelli who are really inconsistent. Balotelli finally ended 10 games without a goal. Sometimes he will score in 4 a game, then the next game he's useless. I sometimes tell him I expect a performance from him which sometimes works, usually having a go at him at halftime works too, but basically it's a pain trying to get him motivated for every game. I've always had problems with VDV. Except for a few games I've never been able to get the best out of him. I recently had enough of him so decided to threaten to put him on the transfer market. He apologised and said he would do better. He has been doing better than he was, but still not as well as I think he could.

Anyone else have a similar problem and found a way to stop it?

You're not playing them correctly.

Welcome to my world with this, it's a pain in the *** for sure.

Believe me I've looked into how to get the best out of them and what role they should be in. I usually have Balotelli as a poacher and now and again as an inside forward on the left. I don't think this is the issue. Like I say, Balotelli has scored 4 goals in a game for me about 3 times. He usually scores plenty of goals a season, but also has plenty of games where he under performs. I've heard others on this forum tell me VDV scores plenty of long range goals and freekicks for them, but this is not the case for me. I've had him for about 6 years now and his average rating must be somewhere between 6.5 and 7.0. I tell him to shoot from long range and every shot is high and wide. Once in a blue moon he'll score, but I don't like my players missing chance after chance like that so very rarely have any of them set to shoot from distance (maybe that's the problem, maybe I need to let the shoot from distance more often so they get better at it!?!). I have VDV set as Attack Midfielder/Support or Advanced Midfielder/Attack with high creativity.

I set all my players to rarely take long shots but they still do and it works.. Maniche and Zapater on my Sporting CP save always take long shots and score 1 like every 4 games, try setting it to rarely and see how it goes, when it's set at rarely, they will only shoot if they know they can get it on target, remember rarely doesn't mean never.

That's what I do. I have all my players set to shot from range rarely. Balotelli still tries far too often for my liking. That's the not the problem though. I'm more concerned about getting them playing consistently well without having to keep telling them, or is this what you get with these kind of players?

Balotelli is just inconsistent because his consistency attribute is set low in the database.
You can't affect this in any way.

It'***** and miss for some players. I don't know how the form aspect works because I had Van Persie getting Best Player of the Season and golden boot for 2 or 3 years in a row with atleast 30 goals a season.
Then he loses it all of a sudden and can't score to save his life. No goals after 10 games and my Arsenal side suffer. Threats don't work so I guess I have to get rid of him and let some new players get the spot up front.
