Hi,

Ok previously I managed Liverpool and it was all going quite good. I even survived the change over of a new chairman who wanted to replace me, but the supporters persuaded him not too. Anyway, he got a new loan for the club (10 years) and the loan repayments were that much that we were loosing 63mil a season, and there was nothing I could do about it (transfer and wage budgets were brilliant, I was hundreds of thousands under the wage budgets).

So because I thought in another season the club would be bankrupt I quite and moved to another club. Yet again, this club is in a similar situation but by a much smaller amount (I now manage Hereford United). The club is roughly losing 160k a month.

I want to know how much I have to worry about finances, or whether I just worry about controlling my budgets (wage + transfers)? What would happen if the club did eventually have no balance, or will the board intervene and should I forget about it and leave it too them.

The only way I can see about having any bearing on these finances is cutting down on signing on fees, winning matches (to get income and winning bonuses), and selling players etc etc

I feel I cannot change the clubs finances and this is the same with many clubs so Im slightly disillusioned with FM09 now...

Please explain it all to me

Thanks,
Jamie.

Just to add the clubs balance is actually -230k lol what do I do? Im starting to dislike FM09 now after seeing how rubbish the system is..

Not much you can do to help out other than by selling players - mind you, your chairman will do that for you if things become too bad...

^^ That's pretty much it, all you can do is your bit which is to keep the wage budget down and try not to spend too much money. You probably shouldn't have worried yourself so much. I tend not to focus on the finances too much. As long as the wage budgets are good, I'm not spending excessive amounts of money and I'm filling the stadium, I'm doing my bit and the rest is the boards respsonsibility.

Ok thanks for the advice. But what I was really looking for is would I potentially be sacked if we stay bust even though I have no control over the finances as Im doing all I can..? It doesn't take a financial expert to see we are in debt and looking at it now there is no-way I can get us out (unless new loan is made putting us in more debt) so im wondering whether to bother with this club and others if Im going to be sacked in the near future - because thats what I feel like...

Cheers

You may be sacked in a take over, or if the club gets points deducted for going into administration and the team fails to hit minimum expectations of the board (yeah, it sucks but neither they or the fans currently take into account points deductions for financial reasons...). Otherwise, providing you're managing your end of things (ie wages) ok, then you won't be sacked for the team losing money. It just becomes a very tough job if you're having players sold from under you and you're still expected to make the same targets without them and if you then get a points deduction on top of that as well as having your wage budget slashed and if there's a takeover coming then you'll have a transfer embargo... does that sound like a scenario where you might be sacked if you can't perform miracles? ;)

So there is nothing I can do, what is a parent or feeder club, would the club get any financial backing from that if I requested it?

You might be able to generate more finances by asking for feeder clubs and then choosing the ones which offer commercial links. But it's like micturating in the ocean - you don't get to see huge benefits, and what benefits do occur take a fair while to develop.

Parent clubs may offer commercial links, but same thing applies - it will take ages to see what results they'd bring. A big parent club would allow you to have a pre-season friendly which would generate decent revenue, and getting a free player or two on loan for a season at a time is always a bargain in my book if they're coming from the reserve or youth team of a Premier league club.

But requesting such things doesn't mean they'll happen as the board can reject the request or accept it but then fail to find a suitable club to partner with.

What parent and feeder clubs don't do is give you wodges of cash to prop you up. Think of the financial rewards more as getting the odd Christmas or birthday present from the Uncle you never see and you'll not be disappointed.

Ive resigned from manager of Hereford now. We are in the minuses and going in even futher, no way of getting out. We only had 1 coach and 1 phsyia so understaffed couldnt get more because no balance. I can see I would have gone into admin and been sacked so packed it in early. Its so annoying when a team at heart is beyond repair..

if you need to cut cost, pull your youth and reserve teams out, selling every single player on a free, or any cash you can get

The reason that wouldnt work is because we are spending way to much that we have coming in (income), so it would be a temp fix for a few months, and after that we are a load of players down and in the same situation..

See what I mean.. FM09 is not the best game based on finances, if there was user input I could help, but there isnt and the board dont seem to do anything. I know its only a game but very unrealistic that hasent been thought through.
