Network driving me mad!!!

I have been playing these games for years and love them, but only one haver I been able to set up a Network game and that was when my mate had his pc in the same house as me and the same IP address.
My efforts on 2010 have equally been thwarted so far...I have set myself as the server and set up a game...my pals in London are putting in my IP address from the status bar and nothing is connecting!
This is becoming really annoying!
I've knocked out the Firewall on my pc to see if that helps but nothing!
ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL GRATEFULLY BE RECIEVED!!!

Your best bet is to use Hamachi.

Cheers guys I'll give it a go!
My mate who owns the house I live in seems to think it might be a probablem that we have a dynamic IP address rather than a static one, but I can play my PS3 with no problems so not sure if this makes a difference?
