Network problems

Can you play a network game with someone who is using steam and someone who Is not?

I have a mate who uses steam, I dont. We are connected using hamachi but I always comes up "Please choose another server, your using the wrong type" or something simmilar to that. Some help please would be nice.

Steam isn't the issue, especially not if you are using Hamachi mate.
