I just wanted to start off that I'm an American football fan. Been playing "American Football" text sim game for about 10 years, but ever since i saw this game i have feel in love with what this game has to offer. So since i have really no clue about soccer i like to ask you experts a few questions.

I'm trying to understand the transfer concept thing and also how to get new players on my team.

1. How do i get new players on my team? Is it through "Transfers" only?
2. My team gave no transfer money so how would i get players?
3. Do you get player from drafts like we do in American football, or is it only through transfer?

I have sooooo much to learn that its not even funny. I really have no clue about soccer, but the way this game is set up it makes me want to learn more about the game. I just wish they had an american football text sim like this.

Now most likely i will pop in fom time to time to gain some help.

Thanks

In football we have transfer windows in January to February and also the start of summer like june or july not sure which one through to September when the season starts again once these times have past you cannot PURCHASE players only frees and loans. This is the only time we can BUY players using transfer budgets, the reason your team may not have much money is due to financial reasons, what team are you ? however you can get new players without a budget if you look on search then onto players there is a tab that says free agents that is where you can get players to your club without having to pay a fee just there wages and also loans so you can get a player off a club like Manchester United for one season.

Hope this helps you welcome to FM Base any other questions feel free to ask :D

Thanks Pompey, I understand.

I'm playing as Braunschweig. Yes, it has $0 budget for transfer.

So let me get this straight. My "Transfer Budget" handles the fee i need to pay to get purchase players?

My salary buget handles my players wages be it Free Agents or Purchase Players?

Also is it 25 man to a roster?

yes absolutely correct and also when loaning players sometime you may need to pay some of there wages and sometimes not but also if a player earns lets say ?5,000 sometimes you can just pay 10% of that ?5,000 or another percentage depending on how much u wanna pay really

One last question Pompey for tonight.

In the NFL we are allowed 53 players on a team and only 53 players. So when a player gets hurt for a long period of time you can put him on "IR" (Injury Reserve) to free up a spot. so my question is:

1. How do you free up a spot on a soccer roster if a player is hurt for a long period of time?
2. What is the max amount of players on a team?

Cheers

First Team

You can have more than 25 players in your team. But you can only register 25 players to play in the league. Players below the age of 21 don't require registration I think. Excess players that don't fit in your registration, you can send them out on a season loan to other teams so they improve by getting play time. Young players can either be put in the youth squad or in the reserve/second squad (England has reserve league, Spain has second teams that participate in the same league but lower divisions).

Your money is divided between transfer budget and salary budget. You can move them back and forth to suit your needs.

You should play with a bigger team so that you can make mistakes and still get things right. Try playing with a team like Manchester City, Arsenal, Real Madrid, or Juventus.

In football, teams with resources buy players to fit their tactics. Teams with low resources create tactics to make sure they get the best out of the players they have.

Basic Formations

4-4-2: Balanced between defense and attack.
4-3-3: Useful for position play and having strength in the midfield as well as wide options.
4-2-3-1: Good for recovering the ball due to there being 2 CDM's and starting a quick counter attack.

All other formations are deviations more or less and are useful for things you want to accomplish or for the players you have. But the formations stated above are the 3 most common ones.

Roles

In the NFL you have specialized roles like the quarterback, the running back, wide receivers, tight end, etc.. In football its the same but their roles are more unique and they all contribute in their own way.

Likes say you use a regular holding 4-3-3 (4 at the back, 1CDM, 2CM, 2 Wingers, 1 ST).

Your fullbacks (LB and RB), their role is to go up and add width to the midfield as well as to cross the ball the players in the box if they make it all the way to the final third. The players in the box will try to head the ball or kick the ball into the goal. They also have to trackback to defend the wings if the opposing team starts a counter attack.

You centerbacks (CB), their role is to dispossess the opponent and clear away the ball so that the goalkeeper doesn't find himself in an undesirable situation.

The Center Defensive Midfielder (CDM), his role is to sweep up plays in the midfield before they start or to intercept passes that may be dangerous to you in the final third.

The Center Midfielders (CM). They both help maintain possession in the midfield and pass the ball forward. You may have one set as a playmaker (usually your best passer who has the mentality to create plays and helps your team start attacks). The other midfielder may be a Box-to-Box player who goes up and down to help attack and defend (needs good stamina for this and speed helps too). Or you may have an additional ball winner if you need to be more defensive in the midfield and need to recover possession faster. Having 2 playmakers usually slows down your team as the playmaker tends to dictate the tempo and takes his time finding a position where he can do ideal passes.

The Wingers can either run forward and cross the ball to your striker or to your CM's in the box. Wingers can also be played as inside forwards and they cut in to try to score (like Cristiano Ronaldo or Arjen Robben). For wingers that cut in, it's best if their strong foot is the foot that faces inwards (right foot for LW and left foot for RW).

The striker's main role is to score. He can also help set up plays by passing the ball backwards or holding the ball and waiting for teammates to come in to get into open positions. Striker's dont always have to be fast. They can be strong or technical as well. Use them to their best of their abilities. The striker may even be useful for getting your wingers to score instead.

you can have any ammount in a squad so if you feel you have to much you can place some players i your reserves or younger ones in your youth team like Under 21s but when it comes to registering your squad for a season in the English Top Division
( Premier League) you can only have 25 players i think

1) You don't free up a spot. The player is registered until the next transfer window. Usually player's won't get hurt for more than 3-4 months at a time. Usually most injures are from a few days to a few weeks to maybe a month or 2. If for some rare reason a player is out for 3 months or more due to a torn hamstring or broken leg then you can just leave him out of registration in the winter (January-February) or in the summer (July-September). But this is never the case. Players eventually come back and it takes a while for them to recover their form.

A striker may move up to give space to the midfielders to go up with the ball. Or a striker may move downwards (deep) to his midfielders to get the opponent's centerbacks to go up towards him. The centerbacks going up may leave gaps between themselves and the fullbacks, wingers who play as inside forwards can cut inside and receiver passes and run to score this way.

Half of football is what happens when you don't have the ball. Many people think its only kicking a ball around. It's not.

Use your imagination and think about how your team will move when they have and don't have the ball. Also think about how the opponent will react to certain movements. Once you learn this, you will find ways to get your opponent to do what you want so you can find scoring opportunities.

Metz, very helpful.

Btw i love taking on weaker teams and building them up. I find i learn the game better when doing so.

So far i've been getting the hang of the game. My team won 3 straight preseason games. 4 if you include beating the reserve team which i don't like to count. Resigned 4 main players to build my team around. Its been a lot of fun so far. I like the hard time i'm going to have rebuilding. Its one of the best parts of the game.

I had no idea soccer could be so much fun to watch..:)

You should do a story when the full game comes out! I think everyone would enjoy seeing you learn the game, and be very supportive at the same time.

Hey Clay, welcome to the FM-verse.

I'll answer 2. and 3. since 1. has already been answered.

2. You can increase your transfer budget by selling players, winning competitions, increasing your fanbase and stature and so on. Of course this does take time and with a team such as Braunschweig it will take a couple of seasons to get moderate finances.

3. The MLS is the ONLY league in soccer that has a draft system. All the other leagues use a youth intake system/academies where you can create talent straight from your team's youth set-up. Of course there are numerous factors such as scouts and the level of youth facilities which are taken into account. Youth intakes are usually in March for all the European-based clubs.
