I got FM13 for christmas & decided to look for young/old player that have been recommended & I find they are not included in the search. Is this because when steam loaded my game there had been an update that had removed them?

When you started the game what leagues did you load and what database size. Because if you we're recommended a lower league Spanish player and you haven't selected Spain or have a low database and only top tier activated you won't be able to get him.
It depends on the leagues and database size you have loaded. The bigger the database, the more players are loaded but you can still miss out on particular players. For example, if your after a Norwegian player, the best idea is to either load all Norwegian players upon setting up a new game or alternatively load the Norwegian league as playable.
