Newport IOW

Newport IOW are a team based on the Isle of Wight and have been established for over a hundred years after being founded in 1888. They've never got very high in the football pyramid, playing one season below the Conference South. They are currently plying their trade in the Wessex League Premier Division. Famous ex players include Brendan Rodgers and Guy Whittingham, with a number of players in their youth teams going on to professional academies.

In this save, I will be playing on the basis that the club has been bought by a local fan who has had some success in the lottery. It won't be masses of many used, otherwise it would be too easy, but I like to have some sort of story to my FM saves. My aim will be to focus on youth and try and sell on to higher leagues, while climbing the pyramid myself, with the ultimate aim to get to the top flight.

Newport play at St George's Park which is based in the centre of the town. The ground can hold up to 4000 people, but there is only one stand, so only 300 can be seated.

Current Squad

The team have only 4 players to start with Liam Triggs (ex Pompey RB), Aidan Sainsbury (ex Bournmouth CM), Scott Sampson (ex Bournmouth CB) and Scott Jones (ex Havant LW) starting at the club. I'll look to operate from a base squad of 20 all on part time contracts with options to bring in loans and frees if injuries strike badly. Full squad screenshots on first update.

This is the first eleven I've put together over pre season, all of these came in on free transfers with most on amateur contracts. Scott Jones and Liam Triggs are the two who started at the club and are two of the best players in the side. Kingsmill and Hughes were both really impressive signings too. I've chosen to play a flexible 4-2-3-1 with the overload mentality as in LLM you will concede goals, but I'm just trying to outscore the opposition.

These are the instructions I've gone with, as you can see it is an attacking game using route one football as my players simply don't have the ability to pass the ball and play flowing football. I also want them to stick to their positions as they don't have the mental stats to roam. The run at defence instruction is chosen as my wingers have good dribbling stats.

Derek Tieku

Tieku has been really impressive in pre season and has the attributes and potential to play for the side for at least three or four season. His physical stats are really good for this level, so he should be able to get in behind defences and get a few goals. I'll try and improve his finishing stat, as he could be a top player if that improves.

Good luck with this. It's always interesting to read about lower League clubs. I am thinking of tackling a club like this after my Manchester United save that's designed to get me into the game!

I have had Newcastle and Wolfsburg saves, but fancied a crack at the lower leagues. I've never managed to get into a lower league save, but this one is going well so far!

August - October Update

It has been a good start in the league, winning the majority of our games and promotion looks a real possibility but it will be tough as only the top side gets promoted. The quality in our side has shown and our tactics have led to a lot of goals, and has resulted into some really entertaining yet nervy games. Our front three in particular has been excellent with Jones, Hughes and Tieku all getting among the goals. I've been looking for a good player to play the CAM position, with Laurent Wilson coming in on loan from Bristol Rovers. It was disappointing to drop out of the FA Cup and the Wessex Cup early, but we will target the FA vase for a run.

As you can see, we've had a good start, with Tieku leading the goal charts and reaching a secure position of 2nd well clear of third. However in this league you need to finish top to get promotion and we need that this season with the squad we have. Everybody in our squad is good enough for the Southern Premier League (two divisions higher than the Wessex Prem) according to scout reports, so we should find the first couple of seasons easy. Even in the games we've lost, we have dominated. It looks between us and Fareham for promotion and we play them in a few weeks at home.

Screenshot of Tieku's stats, would highly recommend him, very good physical stats and is only 19!
