Shock Managerial Appointment At Dragao

After the sudden shock resignation of Head Coach Jesualdo Ferreira, FC Porto Chariman Pinto da Costa called a press conference earlier this afternoon, appointing unknown Englishman Stuart Watson as the club's new Head Coach. Earlier in the week, big names including Quique Flores, Bernd Schuster, Roberto Mancini and even Luiz Felipe Scolari were linked with the job.

On the appointment, Pinto da Costa said that "the desicion was an unanimous choice of the board, and was more about the job in hand than the media attention of a high profile appointment."

Watson is following in the footsteps of one of the greatest managers of all-time, the late, great Sir Bobby Robson, who also managed the Dragoes from 1994-19986, winning two succesive league titles, and a Portuguese Cup, with an impressive 81 wins in 120 games. Whether Watson has the talent to emulate the legendary manager's success is still unknown, and the Porto fans are expectant of silverware to add to their already impressive trophy room.

Stuart Watson said "I am really pleased to have the chance to work here, it's a fantastic club with a great following, and it was impossible to turn down the job. I have many critics, but I intend to prove them wrong by winning games, and steadily building a side that can challenge Europe's elite."

SQUAD

Goalkeepers

At thsi point, my keepers should serve me well, but I will be keeping an eye out for a new keeper for next season.

Defenders

Relatively strong, may need a couple of decent Full-Backs in to cover.

Midfielders

Promising midfield, however I may need a little strengthening.

Strikers

No problems here, the strongest position.

I have the target to win the League this season, and I have been given a budget of 10m to spend.

Preferred Lineup(before signings)

A good lineup, may slightly need improving.

Not so much about the league, my main goal is to take Porto to the pinnacle of Europe. Should be guaranteed top three, only real problems will be Benfica and Sporting.

After a busy day in the transfer market, I have signed the players that I want to take the club forward. A mixture of youth for the future and some more seasoned players. I am very happy with the players I have brought in.

TRANSFERS SO FAR

I would just like to note that Marquinhos Gabriel is actually Marquinhos, the one from Internacional, and I decided to change his name to that because I have both Marquinhos' at the club. I am sure this side will win the league, and I am looking to get past the group stages of the Champions League.

Joining the list could be Rafael van der Vaart(Real Madrid, AMC, Loan to Buy), Jorge Ribeiro(Benfica, D/WBL, 500k).
Jano Ananidze(Spartak Moscow) joins in 2011, and Sani Emmanuel(Bodens BK) joins in January.

My first game was against Sparta Prague, away.

Pleased with the result, just needed to dominate the possesion more. Hulk getting off the mark was important, hopefully the first of many. Also very pleased with the input of Marquinhos Gabriel, who also grabbed himself a goal.

Update Soon!

Signings looking good, dont think I have overpaid for anyone, in fact I think I have got bargains, especially Diakhate for 1.3m.

good luck :P

My second game was against Duisburg(GER), away.

I was very please with the result, and also had a couple of quality goals, one from Pancrate and one from Marquinhos Gabriel. Hulk got a couple, which is a sign that the goals may be flowing. Higher possession this time something which I was working to achieve.

I have told Hulk to try and beat the offside trap, which I think will be beneficial, due to his pace and finishing.

Also, I missed out on van der Vaart, who joined Galatasaray for £8.5m, but it isnt a blow.

Update soon.

Update

Third friendly of my career was against Aviron Bayonnais away. Again, we won, but still unhappy with conceding two against a French National Side, especially when two goals could have been prevented. A win is a win though.

Good possession again. plenty of shots, but not plenty of them on target. Hulk only played for around 30 minutes today, but Pancrate grabbed another goal, and also I was impressed with Ernesto Farias, who grabbed a brace, although could and should have had 4 or 5.

Update soon.
