i started with villa and bought all the best youngsters but got sacked as results were poor
keep changing to all the tactics downloaded from this site none work
even managed man cit and bought the best players yet still 8th in league
any ideas? tactics seem very unrealistic as i have gret players

The three key to success to using downloaded tactics

1. Make sure the tactic suits to your players. If you don't got the right player for that tactic, don't force to play with it.

2. Tweak it accordingly to your player's ability. The smallest tweak such like lessen the through ball or increase long shots can boost the team's performance significantly. Basically don't plug and play

3. Give it a time to gel. The fastest way to do it is to apply it since pre-season, and put workload on maximum on match preparation with 'none' special area (or, after a lot of purchase: team blend). It will adapt faster, like a month or two.

And since you're buying a lot of players. You do know they would also need to gel with eachother which takes quite a while.

very good advice man even thought i don't download any tactic and i try to do my own you are the first one whit a good advice for a new or experience player
thx

If everything is going wrong, I find myself dropping back into a familiar 4-4-2. Defending CBs, supporting FBs, one defending CM, one supporting CM, two attacking wide mids, one deep lying forward and one advanced forward. Generally, you can't go wrong with that kind of setup.

The general problem is that advice for people who are new to the game and aren't "getting it" is very poor.

General advice like "make sure the tactic suits your players" and "tweak the strategy slightly" are ... well, they don't help, do they? It would be like saying to a person learning to drive "you just need to learn how to parallel park better". It's all very well saying it, but nobody ever seems to offer any advice on how. You can say that you have to tweak the strategies and make sure your players fit it, but without explaining what to look for in players and how to recognise what's going wrong in a strategy, it never helps.

This is just the perspective of someone who's in the same kind of position as the OP. Being a newbie is very frustrating in this community.

you will get nowhere by changing tactics all the time, espically as you have bought a load of players. tactics requre time for the squad to bed in and blend together. there is no set way of putting a tactic together onther than looking at the atrributes of the players you have

if you have no knowledge of the game, i suggest you download and read tactical theorems'10

Im going to agree with mike here. I mean why just buy all the good players, ull not win anything doing that since youve upsetted the harmony of your team.

my advice is to set out your starting 11, then decide on your mentality ( Attk, def, etc ) and then base your player roles on the guys in those positions for maximum effect.

if your still struggling with the tactics side, go manage a team like real madrid and play around with makin some while ur getting used to it

I disagree. You really want people here to go all with the 'complicated' stuff instead of the basic stuff first?

I mean it's basic stuff really. Even a new player who understands the basic of football would understand. You don't really want to see someone who ask a general question like the OP to be answered with answers with so much detail and complexity.

Here's an easy example. Make sure the tactic suit the player : You got rubbish winger with no pace. Would you expect to play a 4-4-2 wingers? I mean really? This kind of explanation is needed? I was newb and would have knew this when I read it.

Making a comparison between general advices and advising some new driver to 'park parallel better' is, for me at least, irrelevant. General advices are more like 'dude make sure you wear your seatbelt, there's enough gas to go for the road' or something.

We've all been a newbie. I still am. But instead of whining of people not giving me all the information I needed and direct every little step of playing with FM, I search for the information online and if I don't get a point or two, I ask. And most importantly, actually do something in the game. The basic stuff can be learnt in a very short time

what is with the use sticky police he wants to ask people a question and get help that what the site is for he is not hurting no one

Because otherwise their will be 30-50 new threads everyday, threads that could have been in one single thread, not getting in the way of discussion threads actually containing information on the subject

Anyway, I have defined what a small question is the OP of the same thread, here is a quote

Instead of starting new threads, please put your small question in here.

A small question is in my definition a question that has a straight answer, a question that there is no point in having a discussion about. when the one has provided enough information about the problem If you feel that you want to brainstorm around a subject you have doubts about,, feel free to start a thread about it

Please note that this is the tactics & training part of the forum so if you have anything that relates to graphics, players or if you are wondering if your computer is good enough to run FM11, don't hesitate to ask your questions in those parts of the forum instead.

Please don't be so insulting. Nobody's whining, it's just an honest description of what it's like to be a total newbie in the community.

This happens every time I try to get into the game. I read up on everything, I do things which make perfect sense, I follow the advice, make logical tweaks of my own which should help, make it fit my team, everything. And then nothing works. I just lose, lose, lose. And then I see people in exactly the same situation who've been playing for ages who use the exact same tactics with the exact same team and they're like "won everything with this tactic, it's great". So obviously there's something I don't know, something I'm doing wrong. Except attempting to work out what's going wrong is impossible, because I've never received any assistance other than vague generic statements telling me things I already know should be working.

This isn't meant to be hostile, it's just honestly what always happens and what always puts me off the game. People can play this game, but ****** me if I can figure out how ... how do you fix what's going wrong if there's no way to help you figure out what's going wrong? It's like putting a broken car in front of someone who doesn't know anything about cars and expecting them to fix it; you have to have some kind of resource to teach them about the car parts, what works and why it works. That just doesn't seem to exist for this game.

I started a game with Villa and used this tactic to reasonably good effect:

Enyeama- Sweeper Keeper- support
Beye- Full Back- Attack
Dunne and Davies- Centre back- Defend
Warnock- Full back- support
Reo- Coker- Def mid- Defend
Petrov- DLP- Support
Sidwell- B2B- Support
Ireland- Adv. Playmaker (In AMR)- Attack
Downing- Winger- Attack
Agbonlahor- Adv. Forwar- Attack

Not saying you should copy it but that is just an idea of a tactic you could use with Villa. Id recommend a better attacking right back though, and a better left winger

make sure you use defend aways to the top 6 or 5 or maby counter and use counter at home to the top 4 for sure they will attack alot

look at how the othere team plays like arsenal play the passing game with wide men so you should look to use a tactic to counter that i use a 4-1-2-1-2 aginst them outnumber them in the ceter and man mark the only stricker you can do this with 2 def to mark him out the game if they try and use him as the only way to score and if they change i game so should you if they keep goig through the center couter that by -playing more centeral and same with wider

and always give you team lots of time to gel dont thik you can sell 5 p;ayers buy 7 and they will play as if it was fine

and dont scream at your players it does not work most times try to make keep them happy it always helps

good luck
