When certain countries can offer contracts to players with expiring contracts before you get a chance.

Especially when you're managing medium-lowish leagues (around league 1) and you can't afford many players - you scout out a player and see he would be fantastic for your team and would be interested in joining.

So maybe you offer his current team as much as you can afford but it isn't enough. Then you have no choice but to put him on your shortlist ready to offer him a contract as soon as you can. Then suddenly some foreign team offers a contract and he accepts before you can even approach to sign him.

Who else has pet peeves like this?

My pet peeve is when I offer a player a great contract, everything he wants, then he goes off and signs for one of my rivals! Landon Donovan seems to always sign for Chelsea, when I offer him a stupidly big contract.

Its gonna be as realistic as possible, in that you could offer them a ridiculously high wage but they'd decline because their heart is set elsewhere.

that's standard rules in England - foreign players can be signed within 6 months of their expiring contract - you can sign someone from spain in january if their contract expires in june, but they can also do the same to one of your league's players. It can be frustrating to keep an eye on someone in England, and wait until June 1 to offer a contract (without paying a transfer fee), to only have a team from France be able to offer that same person a contract in january.
