Depends what team you are.

As Gateshead there have been plenty of 5 star 17-year olds. Sell them on for a profit in a few years :)

Generally 4 stars, i only buy the odd 3.5 PA star if they cost around 2.5mil.

I started at 3 stars... Now I don't buy a player unless he has at least 3.5-4 stars.

I always look for 4 stars or above. At least then you know if they dont maximise there potential their still going to be fairly decent and playable.
If your looking to buy, play, sell then 3.0 -3.5 id recommend. That sort of range for an English player when they hit there top potential could bring you between £5m-£12m.
I love picking up defender newgens for upto like £2.5m, U18s till their too old. Loan out for 2 seasons now the players are 20 you can pick from your crop.

Anyone described as a 'promising $position' gets bought.

Dont get 3.5 stars unless they have good stats that will help them in the future.
E.g. You are playing a mid table team, by the time the 3.5 stars kid can get into your first team, you already got a good team, look for 4 stars and above :D
