The Challenge

The Challenge itself is simple, create a new game and set you manager profile reputation to the lowest possible setting. You must then start unemployed and seek a job with a football team. The objective is to win the Continental Competition on each of the continents in the world, e.g Champions League. There are 5 Continents, so there are 5 Tournaments to win hence Pentagon Challenge.

The Manger

Now to give some background into the manager of this Challenge. Scott Dickson played youth football for 2 and a half years before damage to the cartilage in his left foot and knee caused him to retire from the game at a very early age of 17. In Scott's 2 and a half year footballing spell, his team won the youth 2nd division with Scott finishing as the highest goalscorer of the league.

Desperate to get back into football after an operation, Scott started coaching youth football and in his first year, guided a local boys club back into the top division; the team didn't lose a game that season. Scott coaches this side for a further 2 years before taking over the position of manager of a local amateur side. However, Scott struggled to cope with the new surroundings and the pressure that came with the job, and was sacked at the end of his second season.

This sacking was followed up with a number of job offers by other amateur clubs, who saw potential in the young manager. One northern club looks promising to Scott, who took up their job offer. After 3 years employment, Scott had achieved success in the top league, and the league cup twice. His coaching qualifications had also been improved, allowing the young manager (now 25) the chance to coach professional teams.

At the end of his third year, Scott's contract with the side expired. Scott, looking to further his career as a manager, set upon a challenge.

Job Interview Successful

After a successful interview, South African side United FC have declared Scott Dickson as their new manager. They believe his passion, vision and determination are the right qualities needed to drive the club onto success.

The Team and Facilities

As can be seen from the attached images, the United FC squad itself is small, with only 17 players in the first team. There are zero contracted reserve and youth player. With a budget of just under 7k and £0 available for wages, it is going to be a difficult first season. As can be viewed, the league is already underway, with only 1 game being played by the majority of teams in the league. United FC have still to play their first game.

Facilities at the club are also poor, as are the club staff. Much work must be undertaken in order for a successful campaign to be achieved.

The club is expected to finish bottom of the league, but then, all great managers have to start somewhere

The first month of the season saw United FC take 2 draws and 2 wins. African Warriors was another team that I had applied for for a job. However, they knocked me back, saying I was not good enough to manage their side. A 3-1 victory over them seemed to state otherwise. The club are currently 4th place in the league, 2 points off the top spot.

During the transfer window, I had to bring in a new goalkeeper and 2 new centre backs and a left back. The current ones at the squad were not up to scratch. The players who were replaced, were also released to balance out the wage budget, as no club would take them on loan or as a transfer.

The second month in charge saw United FC lose 2 games, and then win 2 games. Lucky Khune played a big part in 3 out of the 4 of those games. Scoring the teams only goal against Santos. He then missed the game against Vasco with a virus, but was fit to return against Cape Town. Khune scored a brace against Cape town before setting up Shiba for the third with Merase scoring a wonder goal from 35 yards out.

Khune then scored a brace against Thanda Royal Zulu while setting up the other 3 goals for Motale, Merase and Shiba.

My United FC player of the Month goes to Khune

United FC now top of the league after 13 League games, 1 point ahead of Baroka FC. The little underdogs who were predicted to finish dead bottom of their league are holding their own. This month saw 3 wins and a loss with Linda Shiba being the clubs influential player of the month, taking his own goal tally to 8 for the season. Khune still has 7 goals. Mthombeni is also proving to be a very decisive midfielder. He is currently top of the assist table for the league.

Still a long way to go in the season but if the team continue with their current forn and run of results, we should be able to get promoted to the South African Top flight

3 games remain in the season and United FC find themselves in 4th place, 2 points adrift of a playoff spot. The last 3 games see the team go up against Milano, Jomo Cosmos and Baroka. 3 teams that the club has struggled against all season. If all goes well then hopefully the team will be in the Premier Division come next season.

End of Season 1

The first season in charge of United FC did not turn out as I had planned. Initially I would have accepted a mid table finish, never mind 4th place, but given the season the team had up until the last few months of the season, I would really have liked to have finished in the playoffs at least. 4th place is a respectable finish, however, for a team that were predicted to finish rock bottom.

There are a number of players that will leave the club, mostly due to wage demands. It now falls to me, to rebuild the squad using very little money. The player being brought in will probably be free transfers.

Finance wise, the club has not fared well this season. Although I handled the wage budget well, off-field incidents have resulted in the club being unable to supply me with any increased figures for the new season. This will increase the difficulty of sourcing better players to improve the squad.

However, the challenge is welcomed and I will do whatever I can in my power to improve the squad for next season and push towards the top flight!

Despite achieving 4th place in the league the board are still not happy (they never are) and have demanded to speak to me about my performance. My job is currently under intense scrutiny and I must pick up 11 points in the first 5 games of the season if I am to keep my job (should be fairly simple).

However, there are a few teams looking to hire me as a manager. So updates will be provided on transfers (ins and outs) and the possibility of a new job

Not only was my season a success, but I managed to finish the highest ever league position recorded for United FC, and the board are still unhappy.

So the board have dropped my wage budget, despite giving more money towards running costs and despite bringing in 60k in winnings. Players will need to leave, and I will need to rely on youth players next season. Great...
