I have decided to make a guide just to explain what the player roles mean... so here goes.
NOTE: This is not meant to be the most in-depth guide, it is just to give an outline.
Center Back roles
- Central Defender - Stops attacker from creating chances and scoring and clears the ball
- Ball Playing defender - Same as central defender, but also starts counter attacks
- Limited Defender - Tackles the ball and clears it with a no - nonsense approach. Does not challenge opposing players for headers
Full Back Roles
- Full Back - Has to defend, but does not mainly challenge for headers. He joins in with attacks, and overlaps and crosses the ball.
- Wing Back - Is expected to play like a defender and midfielder at the same times. He must join attacks, get possession when in midfield and must defend like a defender when the opposing team is attacking.
- Wing Back - Same as the wing back role for a full back, but plays higher up the field.
Defensive Midfielder Roles
- Defensive Midfielder - Looks to protect the defence from oncoming attacks, hold up the ball while the attack is re grouping and plays a pass to the midfielders.
- Deep Lying Playmaker - Plays between defence and midfield and looks to pass the ball to plays higher up the pitch. He must also be responsible defensively.
- Anchor Man - Is like an anchor and plays in between defence and midfield. He doesn't wander too much and his job is to defend and stop attacks. Plays like a center back higher up the field.
Center Midfielder Roles
- Central Midfielder - All rounded player, that must be able to attack and defend. He holds the midfield line and plays the important pass to an attacker and gets back to help the defence.

- Advanced Playmaker - Fashions out most of the chances for his team and plays the important passes. Must turn defence into attack.
Side Midfielder Roles
- Wide Midfielder - Performs defensive and attacking duties on the flank. Crosses the ball in attacks and picks out passes and in defence tries to stop wingers from getting forward.
- Winger - Tries to beat his marker and get higher up the field. Must be able to pass the ball, finish a ball and cross a ball.
- Defensive Winger - Plays much like a Wide Midfielder, but acts more like a wing back, He tries to stop full backs, win the ball and start attacks.
Winger Midfielder Roles
- Winger - Tries to beat his marker and get higher up the field. Must be able to pass the ball, finish a ball and cross a ball.
- Inside Forward - Aims to cut inside and get in the box and tries to contribute to attack and to score. Also plays important passes and crosses.

- Defensive Winger - Plays much like a Wide Midfielder, but he tries to stop full backs, win the ball and start attacks.
- Inside Forward - Aims to cut inside and get in the box and tries to contribute to attack and to score. Also plays important passes and crosses.
- Attacking Midfielder - Players higher up the pitch than a normal midfielder. Fashions out chances for himself and the team. Does not contribute defensively
- Advanced Playmaker - Fashions out most of the chances for his team and plays the important passes. Must turn defence into attack.
- Trequartista - Is the main attacking outlet for your team. He wanders around looking for space and fashions out chances. He will never contribute defensive but instead will probably be you main scoring outlet.
Striker Roles
- Deep Lying Forward - He links the midfield to the attack and tries to make chances for himself and his strike partner.
- Advanced Forward - He leads attacking moves and must score and make goals. He chases around for the ball and must be able to score with his foot and by heading.
- Target Man - A physical player who disrupts the defence and tries to bring team mates into play. He uses his head and feet.
- Poacher - Your goal hanger, who looks for chances and sniffs out for goals.
- Complete forward - As the names suggests he is complete. He can create chances for himself and for the team. He does a lot of work and is a mixture of all the striker roles.
- Defensive Forward - He puts pressure on the defence and runs around looking to tackle the ball in order to start an attack. He creates chances for the team rather than score for himself
- Trequartista - Is the main attacking outlet for your team. He wanders around looking for space and fashions out chances. He will never contribute defensive but instead will probably be you main scoring outlet.
