Just started playing fm2014 (upgraded from an old old version). in my 2nd season with Stuttgart after coming 5th in the first & winning the German cup.

Now most of may players star recommendation by the assistant has doped. Most who were 'good player for most 1st div teams' went from 4 to 3. Same with players I'm scouting.

Last year expectations were top half finish now it's Euro cup.

Is this why? It's a bit annoying as players I thought would be great buys now suddenly seem not so great!

It's because your reputation has probally risen so they will still be good for most 1st div teams but because of your rep their star rating drops.

Have you been buying and selling players? The star rating system is based on the average of your team.

So those four star players will drop if you sign more four star or higher players because your team average will increase along with them. The same will happen if you start to sell of the poor players in your team, the impact isn't as pronounced but it happens.

thanks had seen this before but I thought it would be geadual. It seems to really just have hapend one week till the next. This means my previous scoutings are worthless or at least the stars are worthless for filtering as it's mixing old and new

Right so after re-reading and playing some more I think I finally properly get it. From what I gather the star ratings are relative to other players in that squad of that position.

However going back to an older save and comparing it seems descriptions are a not relative. So 2 seasons ago I had a 3* player who was rated as 'Decent player for most 1st div sides' where as now the same player is 2.5* and rated as 'good player for most 1st div sides'. His stats have improved and coaches have been pleased with his development. So despite a drop in stars he's actually a better player now.

Then there are star ratings for the positions and roles which seems to suggest how the player is best used.

So I have done this wrong for years... Just because he's now below 3* doesn't mean that he needs replacing. For cover he'll do just fine
