Ricky Ponting has quit as captain of the Australian cricket team.

Ponting, 36, announced he would step down from the position at a press conference this afternoon in the wake of Australia's disappointing World Cup quarter-final loss and his third Ashes series defeat as captain earlier this year.
Speculation has swirled over the past few weeks about Ponting's future with reports he would retire gathering momentum last week.Sources have stressed that he has not been pushed out of the captaincy.

Ponting has captained Australia in 77 Test matches for 48 wins - the most of any Test skipper - 16 losses and 13 draws. And his 227 one-day matches in charge returned 163 wins, 50 losses and two World Cups.

Michael Clarke is set to replace Ponting as Australian captain at Test and one-day level.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...ng-to-stand-down/story-fn67wv6z-1226029987090 - Apologies for the Australian source, BBC, Sky etc are all asleep on the job it seems.

Australian pundits are already speculating that Pontings body language and general demeanour in the press conference suggest that he didn't want to give up the captaincy and may have been forced into it by Cricket Australia.

Can't say I like the guy, but he was a **** of a captain at his prime, looked a bit suspect in the Ashes series, and the World Cup has hardly gone to plan.

Great player, Great captain, massive ****.

He's said he wants to remain available for selection as a batsman for the forseeable future and hopes the selectors will see fit to continue to select him - i suspect they will in light of his recent century and Australias lack of talent coming through the system.

However i suspect within a tour or two he will be pushed out of the national team and will retire altogether, or perhaps look to head back home and dominate domestic cricket with the Tasmanian Tigers. The IPL is another lucrative option, he's not exactly a Twenty20 big hit style player, but he's a household cricket name, an excellent fielder and able to score runs quickly if needed, all things which the owners/captains/coaching setup of all the IPL clubs will definitely value.

One of the best batsmen, average captain i have to say, but still a legend

I suppose, to be fair, he was captaining a team that was absolute rape when he started, he had Lee, McGrath, Warne, Gillespie, Gilchrist etc all in their prime, it would be hard to lose with players like that in your team. Currently, their team is pretty average, with some good players coming to the end of their careers.

It was on the cards. He was an average captain and was exposed when the likes of McGrath, Warne, Gilchrist, Haydem retired.

One of the best batsman though. No denying that. I just hate him. Hope he gets dropped from the ODI and the Test teams.

He was quite brillaint! Most Indian's love him. Personnaly, I think he did a good job with a lot of the youngsters in the team. 2004-2011 have seen some nice new faces out in the australian team.

And as far as the IPL is concerened, we would love to have him here! The aggression he brings to the field is brilliant, but I don't think the administrators want him around, he's ****** them off way too many times! LOL

Shame he retired now, if he waited a couple of months they wouldve picked Baily but know there going to pick Clarke

Most Indians love him? He gets booed on every ground.

The IPL franchise dont want to take risk by signing him coz that makes the team very unpopular. I dont think he will get a chance in IPL and hope we (RCB) never sign him.

Actually Ponting didn't do any good job with youngsters. He depended on Glen, Warne, Gilchrist, Hayden for too long and had no replacements for them.

hes a **** and i hate him however good on him ...

theyve started to have things go against them and he's stood down thinking that could help change things...

i dont think Cricket australia would have made him retire as captain , i think his body language in interviews is like that a lot of the time tbh
