I would select Top-Half Finish as it reduces the pressure and the funds are enough and with such a threadbare squad injuries can be devastating to your season.

I would cancel all your current friendlies and arrange new ones leaving a gap of three days between them. If you arrange them all away and pick the highest fee it should earn you quite a bit of money which you need as Portsmouth. Or pick home games that earn you the most revenue, it’s up to you. This will also help your team’s fitness levels increase.

Most of my big signings that I made in January were because I want to focus on English youth for the future of my game. Obviously if you have other preferences then that’s fine but I picked these positions to work on building my squad.

This season I played for the most part a 4-4-2 (Wingers) and I ended the season 2nd place close behind Burnley. I was beaten to 1st in the last two games so it was quite a successful season.

Team Analysis

Goalkeepers
Jamie Ashdown
Daryl Flahavan

In Jamie Ashdown you have a decent first choice goalkeeper. Flahavan is decent as well but only as back up to Ashdown. You also have Matthew Gledhill in your U-18 squad who has good potential so if necessary you could give him some game time if the other two are injured. I signed Roy Carroll on a free in January and sold Jamie Ashdown. In January I also brought in Alex Smithies and Jack Butland for the future.

Recommended Transfers
Roy Carroll (January)
Alex Smithies (January)
Jack Butland (January)

Jamie Ashdown – Out (£150k - January)

Defence
Hayden Mullins
Joel Ward
Ibrahima Sonko
Carl Dickinson
Aaron Mokoena
Ricardo Rocha
Herman Hreidarsson
Peter Gregory

Your defence is probably one of the strongest areas of the team. I signed one player in the summer, Vittorio Tosto. He may be getting on a bit but did an excellent job for me and was first choice ahead of Carl Dickinson for most of the season. In January I strengthened my squad by signing Chris Riggott on a free to provide cover for central defence and Nathaniel Clyne from Crystal Palace to cover my right back slot for the future. I loaned out Joel Ward and Peter Gregory as well.

Recommended Transfers
In
Vittorio Tosto
Chris Riggott
Nathaniel Clyne (January)

Out
Joel Ward – Loan
Peter Gregory – Loan

Midfield
Liam Lawrence
Michael Brown
Richard Hughes
Hayden Mullins
Aaron Mokoena
Ellis Martin
Billy Goddard

Your midfield is a bit short on players especially on the wings. I made quite a few free signings in the summer but only used one or two so I shall name the ones that played an important part in my campaign. I signed Mathieu Berson along with Romain Gasmi in the summer. Berson is a great Ball Winning Midfielder – Defend and Gasmi is a great winger who can play both wings and in the centre and also chipped in with some goals as well. After the transfer embargo I signed Donal McDermott on loan from Manchester City who was also a star.

Recommended Transfers
In
Mathieu Berson
Romain Gasmi
Donal McDermott – Loan

Out
Billy Goddard (Sold for £2.5k, didn’t go down well with fans)
Ellis Martin - Loan
Tom Kilbey – Free

Other Signings (Didn’t make more than 5 appearances)
Martijn Reuser
Rui Almeida Monteiro
Hans Somers
Kai Michalke
Santiago Solari

All the above play best as wingers, at best they’re good enough for back-up.

Strikers
Dave Kitson
Dave Nugent
Nwanko Kanu
Nadir Ciftci
Danny Webber

Your strike force is quite good for Championship level and played correctly should do alright. However I made two signings in this area and both helped strengthen my squad. These were Febian Brandy and Andras Simon. Both of these are good young strikers and both are available for free. Brandy is a definite must buy and his goals helped me get promoted. Simon wasn’t quite so impressive but is handy as back-up and should chip in with a few goals. I made a profit on him as well by selling him for £250k in the 2011 summer. I loaned out Nadir Ciftci as well for the season. During the season I was struggling for goals due to injuries and Kitson being rubbish so I promoted Chinedu Vine and Patrick Antelmi from my youth squad. Antelmi made 3 appearances and scored 2 goals so he can be used if struggling.

Recommended Transfers
In
Febian Brandy
Andras Simon

Out
Nadir Ciftci – Loan (Can be recalled)

Backroom Staff

Your first priority should be to sign an Assistant Manager for yourself. My favourite preference out of the ones available to you as Portsmouth is Terry McDermott from Huddersfield. He has good ratings in the necessary areas although only a 3 in Level of Discipline. Just take note that when you use him to issue opposition instructions as he tends to assign hard tackling to everyone so if this isn’t your preference then take note.

Coaches

The coaches for the team aren’t bad for the Championship and it is really up to you if you choose to bring in new ones. Personally I choose to focus on the Scouts and Physios and Assistant Manager and the team. I would wait until you’re promoted to hire better staff.
I would however offer Andy Awford and Paul Hardyman coach contracts so they can work with the first team as well as the youth team. This will give you enough coaches to cover all areas and they won’t ask for a large amount of extra wages.

Physios

I would recommend getting rid of Paul New but keeping Steve Allen at the club and hiring Steve Whitehall. This will give you a good set-up and keeping your players fit will be vital for success.

Scouts

I signed four scouts straight away but it is your own personal preference and how much you use them. I use scouts regularly so need a few to be able to handle the assignments. The four I signed were Bobby Roberts, Glen Cockerill, Barry Whitbread and David Hamilton. I got rid of Dave Hurst though as the four above are enough for my requirements. They may not be the best but they are the best available at the time.
Personally I used Barry Whitbread for scout next opposition as he gave me the most detailed and accurate information back.

Good guide mate. I think if a few pictures were used then this will be even better than it is. :)

Cool cheers mate, I did have some pictures in it whilst I was writing it but they disappeared when I was transferring it from Word to here. I'll have to see if I can get them in it.
