I am the Manager or Kettering town on Football manager and have recently got promoted to League 2. But one thing I have been noticing is that my team give the ball away far too often, leavig the opposition a free chance to score. I have decided to make my players play Possession football. What would be the best tactics/instructions for this?

Many thanks. (H)

In my opinion:

Balanced
Control
Shorter passing
Default creative freedom
Slow tempo
Deeper defensive line
Quite a lot of time wasting

Those are the basic ones I can think of, they work for me.

In addition to what has been said, narrow width and play through the middle also helps

And less through balls, as the lower skilled players may try to attempt killer balls but pass it straight to someone else... :/

Also restrict run from deep for some players, if using it often they will look to break the opposition defence, but when sometimes they don't go forward so much, instead they are available for easy simple pass. This may hurt your attack though, so I would see how it affects your players (wingers, strikers and midfielders mainly) and then decide which option is the best. Also decreasing mentality of your players makes them look for less risky passes rather than through balls behind the defence.

Maybe more disciplined and your best attacking player medium creative freedom.

Play a Formation that better dominates the Middle. 4-1-2-1, 4-3-2-1/-1-2, 4-2-3-1 Deep. More Players in the Middle, More Passes, More Possession...
