Here are two tactics I have had success with in this FM game. They are both possession oriented, fluid tactics, and are very defensively sound (using these tactics, I conceded 13 goals over a season, and obtained 27 clean sheets).
They are not particularly high scoring tactics, or at least haven't been with the players at my disposal. The Wide Midfielders get a decent amount of goals (the starters getting 11 & 13 goals in all competitions) and assists.
For both tactics, the wide men should ideally prefer the foot opposite to the side they are on, and the DLF-S should be good in the air, as well as having decent pace and dribbling. Both CM's should have good work rate and stamina.
For the 4-4-1-1, any good defenders should work. For the 3-4-1-2, it works best if the wider centre backs can also play full back, and the central centre back can also play DM.
The 3-4-1-2 is best used against 2 striker formations, and creates on average 5 chances per chance faced in these matches. The 4-4-1-1 is good against any formation, and on average creates 4 chances per chance faced.
I use my Assistant manager to set OI's. For training, after getting the tactics to "accomplished", I use Defensive Positioning against stronger teams, important away games and games I really can't afford to lose (e.g holding a 1-0 win from a first leg, or if you could lose the lead on the last day with a loss). For other matches I use Attacking Movement.
