Hello Everyone! My first post :) !

I have been playing for about a month and still trying to learn the mechanics regarding Potential Ability. I understand the basic mechanic regarding scouts PA vs actual PA ability (for me players tend to lose about a half star once they are signed) and that players lose PA when they are injured.

I've read that player PA should never go down, however in my game it does even though players have not been injured. Would anyone happen to know the reason for this?

Something else that i noticed with this is that the more accomplished players that I sign, the lower quality players' PA goes down. This would make sense to me in a way since I am playing in the Blue Square League. I have been searching around and can't seem to find an answer to this.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Qopat

The scout's PA is relative to the ability of your club, so you know if they have enough ability to get into your first team. Makes sense really, a player who is a must sign and will become a star at Reading, will be given bad reviews when a Barcelona scout compares him to Messi.

Don't take your scout reports as gospel especially at Blue Square league sides.

Thanks for the replies and advice, I'll be sure to be aware of scouting reports. But, what about players losing PA for no reason. Is it truely because the calibur of the team has gone up?

PA is a stat that doesn't change. Whether a player can or cannot reach their PA however is a completely different matter.

I think he means the star rating.

The star rating represents how good a player is in relation to your current squad, so if you improve your squad it's only normal than most of the players' star rating is reduced.

That's the answer I needed! Cheers for the clarification.

I've read somewhere that folks are able to actually see a players "numbered" rating. Where do I find this?

by downloading genie scout, or fmrte.

the numbered rating is what is generated by the game, you can't actually see it in game- only way you can is if you use genie or fmrte.

Seeing this figure is cheating, but if you're okay with it then just google search Genie Scout FM2011.

It's a great tool

Also the reason your players are losing a star once they have signed is probably because you are using a scout to research him. Then once you sign him the assistant coach is determining the star rating. Check your assistant's ability to determing player potentials on his stats.

So if my scout tells me a player has 3-star potential, does that mean the player would be average relative to other players on the club once fully developed? What does 4 or 5 stars mean?I am in my first ever FM game, first season with Ajax. Their best players are 3.5 stars current ability. I'm getting much better at judging players solely on their ability stats but I'm still relying on the star system to judge potential. My scouts are all 18-20 judging potential so i assume the reports are accurate.

3 is the average for your team.
3.5 is a little above the average, 4 is a fair bit above the average, 4.5 is quite a lot better than the average and 5 is just sign the ****** now.

Thanks, I'm beginning to grasp this. I was thinking of potential in terms of comparing them to all players worldwide. So as my team gets better, the PA stars for players at other clubs will start to drop. If I have the best eleven players in the world, a superstar player at another club might only show 3-star CA/PA according to my scouts, correct?

That's pretty much correct.
The better your team is, generally the lower the star rating of other people will be.

I've been wondering about this for awhile now. Thanks so much.

What about players' potential ability possibly increasing? Is this possible? I signed a regen LB, "Stephen Maher," originally with him having a 3 start PA rating. About a month after signing him his PA was rated at 4 1/2 stars. At the time, my team overall should have been improving, and I only sold one decent player while signing probably 4 or five players with high PA. I'm playing as West Ham and when I bought the player, Maher, I had just been promoted from the LC to the PL in 2017.

Any ideas? Also, I'll think I'll hold off on the genie download...seems like a bit too much help and takes the risk out of signings.

It's rare, but sometimes you get a player that your scouts and everyone else underestimate. I've had a few that my scouts thought were good and once they were signed turned out to be quality, and a couple of real hidden gems with unexpected 4-star potential ratings (they made an immediate impact in the Premier League as well). Generally scouts are overoptimistic (makes sense - most of the players you sign will be making a step up from a lower level, where they will look good by comparison with their opponents and teammates) but now and again it goes the other way.

Potential ability can't really increase by definition, but if your coaches think he's better than your scouts thought they should be right (as they've had longer to look at him). All your coaches will have their own opinion of each player so don't rely on the first report that comes up - they will usually differ by between half and a full star in their assessment and some coaches will be better at judging potential than others.
