BREAKING NEWS

RYAN STUBBS HAS BEEN APPOINTED NEW MANAGER OF SUNDERLAND

newmanagerappointed.png

After yesterday's depature of Steve Bruce and assisant Eric Black, Sunderland chairmen Niall Quinn has moved quickly to appoint former Southend United striker Ryan Stubbs as the clubs new manager. Ryan Stubbs 36, will be the youngest manager in the Premier League history. Stubbs whose playing career was cut short due to a serious leg injury at the age of 25 has 10 years worth of coaching under his belt and now makes his managerial debut. More news to follow when it reaches us.

We know head live to the Stadium of Light where Ryan Stubbs will be introduced to the media

Niall Quinn: "Good afternoon, we are all here today to introduce Ryan Stubbs as the manager of Sunderland Football Club so without futhur ado, welcome Ryan Stubbs, we will now answer any questions you may have"

Roy Mathewson, The Sun: "Ryan, first of all congratulations on your appointment of Sunderland manager, is this a day that will live long in the memory"?

Ryan Stubbs: "Of course, since the day i was forced to retire because of the leg injury, the only think i wanted to do was to manage at the top level and i thank Niall and Sunderland Football Club for giving me that chance".

Tony Smith, The Daily Mirror: "We know that you have all the reconised coaching badges but without any managerial expeince, what sort of job do you think you can achieve?"

Ryan Stubbs: "A good one hopefully. Of course to some people the appoitment of myself may surprise a few people but it will be up to me to prove to people that i am up to the task. I will look to do the best job i can for this club and hopefully prove the doubters wrong".

David Tanner, Sky Sports News: "Many people see Sunderland Football Club as an established Premier League side, will starting your managerial career here get the best from you"?

Ryan Stubbs: "Sunderland are a massive club with a great fan base, a great stadium, great training set up and great players. When i was approached for the job, the moment i got here i knew that this was the club for me. If you look around the set up of the club, i think it has what it takes to make it big in the Premier League. With the right players i think the club can at least push for Europe in the next few years and i hope i am the man to do that".

Paul Stephenson, BBC: "Niall, with some high profile names such as Alan Curbishley, David O'Leary and Mark Hughes all making themselfs available for the job, can you explain to us why Ryan Stubbs in your mind, was the best man for the job"?

Niall Quinn: "I think it would be wrong of me to comment on other managers at this time as Ryan Stubbs is the man i appointed. When i met Ryan, the ideas and plans he put foward to me, i really liked and from that moment on, Ryan was the only candidate for the job".

Martin King, News of the World: "Ryan, have you got any players in mind that you can bring in to the club"?

Ryan Stubbs: "The first think i will be doing is to appoint an assistant to assist me. Then i will sit down and look at the squad i have, which in my views is a very good squad and will be seeing what i can do. The only transfers i will be looking to bring in will be players that will improve the squad, im not going to bring in players just for the sake of it. Im sure when i do start making the club active in the transfer market, your be the first to know".

End of the Interview

Good luck with this.

Unfortunately I won't be following as you appear to have spelt Middlesbrough wrong several times.

Pre-Season Review

After a pre-season that turned out some decent result, Sunderland manager Ryan Stubbs will be happy with the teams performances over the last month and with the players he has managed to bring in. The first bit of business Ryan Stubbs did was bringing in Paul Brush as his assistant from Southend United.

The most notable being Sulley Muntari from Inter Milan for a bargin price of £5.25Million. Youth team players such as Jordan Watson and Ryan Noble have both been allowed to go out on loan to Darlington and Gateshead.

Whilst the transfer window is still open, i expect a few more players to leave on loan to gain first team experience. I have also got a few players pending contract talks such as Franck Moussa from Southend United and Martin Petrov from Manchester City.

Pre-Season Results:

Sunderland 7-1 Sunderland
BENT (3)
CANA
BENJANI
RICHARDSON
TURNER

In a game i expected to win, my lads didn't let me down. I am pleased with the amount of chances we created today and there was some well taken goals to also be pleased about.

Sunderland 6-1 Legia
DJALO (2)
BENJANI
MALBRANQUE
JONES
REID

I am glad we got the win we wanted today and a performance to match. I am disapointed that we went behind so early on but the way the lads responded was first class. I am also pleased with Yannick Djalo, the young striker seems to be settled nicely in the squad and took his two goals really well today.

Oxford United 1-1 Sunderland
BENJANI

Im not to sure what to make of todays game. With many reserve and youth team players on show, we still created enough chances to win the game but credit to Oxford who defended really well.

Gimnistica 1-3 Sunderland
RICHARDSON
DJALO
DOWSON

First game on tour and first win. The lads are really coming on now since the first game. I am pleased with the way we managed to get two early goals to kill the game and when Gimnistica did score, i am pleased that we managed to grap another goal to make sure of the win.

Alaves 0-3 Sunderland
BENT
JONES (2)

Clean sheet today and three goals, couldn't get much better. I tried a blend of youth and first team players today and everyone performed well. I am pleased with Kenwyne Jones who was man of the match, he took his two goals very well.

Valencia 3-1 Sunderland
JONES

Disapointing result today and a disapointing performance to match. We didn't really ge strarted today and let Valencia come on to us.

Ballymena United 0-5 Sunderland
RICHARDSON (2)
BENT
HENDERSON
BENJANI

I expected a win today and the lads didn't disapoint. Five goals away from home and a clean sheet as well. Not a bad way to end pre-season.

Injury News:
John Mensah was the only player left in the treatment room after pre-season. The on loan defender picked up a broken arm against Valencia and will be out for 3 to 4 weeks.

John Mensah- Broken arm- 3 to 4 weeks

Gaffer's Thoughts:
It's been a good pre-season from my point of view. I am pleased with the signings i have managed to bring in and am excited to seeing them in action. I am pleased with the results we picked up and the performances in the matchies apart from the defeat away to Valencia. All in all it's been a good pre-season and we can now look foward to the opening day match with Bolton at the Reebok.

August Review:

The first month of the new Premier League season is now over and Sunderland fans will be looking at the table with joy. The Black Cats sit second in the table after an unbeaten month with some impressive results along the way. During the month, Sunderland also anounced the link between themselfs and Coca-Cola League One side, MK Dons. With this, a few youth team players have been allowed to go out on loan to gain that valuable first team experience.

Transfer News:
With most of Sunderland's business taking place during the pre-season period, more players left the club during the month rather than coming in. Charlie Mulgrew was the only signing this month. The Scottish left back signed for £350,000 from Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen on a four-and-a-half year contract.

Players In:
Charlie Mulgrew- Defender- Aberdeen- £350,000

Players Out:

August Results:

Bolton Wanderers 0-3 Sunderland (F.A Premier League)
MALBRANQUE (2)
RICHARDSON

Two goals from Steed Malbranque and a superb solo effort from Kieran Richardson gave Sunderland their first win at the Reebok Stadium since 2001. The match started perfectly from a Sunderland point of view when Steed Malbranque grapped his first of the afternoon after only 36 seconds after pouncing on a lose ball after Bolton defender Gary Cahill failed to clear his lines. Sunderland then piled on the pressure and thanks to a few smart saves from Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, the score could have looked a lot worse after 15 minutes. Despite the string off fine saves, Jaaskelainen was beaten again by Steed Malbranque on the 19th minute. The midfielder bagged his second of the game with a close range header after a Lee Cattermole corner. Bolton finished the half the stronger side and could have scored when Kevin Davies was put through one-on-one after a delightful pass from Ricardo Gardner but failed to hit the target. The start of the second went from bad to worse for Bolton when Kieran Richardson went on a solo run from his own penalty area to slot the ball charmly past Jaaskelainen. The game ended in a sour note for Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole who picked up a second yellow card on 61 minutes after a foul on Mark Davies. With the one man advantage, Bolton piled on the pressure in the later stages of the game but were unable to beat Sunderland's on form keeper Martin Fulop.

Sunderland 1-1 Chelsea (F.A Premier League)
MUNTARI (pen)

A Nicolas Anelka 83rd minute header spared 10 men Chelsea's blushes today in a match Sunderland manager Ryan Stubbs will be disapointed only to have drawn. Sunderland started the game brightly and forced Petr Cech in to many world class saves from Darren Bent and Lorik Cana. After 22 minutes, Ashley Cole's foul on Steed Malbranque inside the penalty area gave Sunderland a fantastic chance to go ahead in the match. Sulley Muntari stepped up on his home debut and sent Petr Cech the wrong way to give Sunderland the lead. Chelsea came back strong with chance after chance but Sunderland keeper Martin Fulop kept Drogba and co out. The second half heated up when an incident between both sets off players ended up with Chelsea captain John Terry sent off for raising his hand towards Yannick Djalo. Despite the wave of Chelsea attack, Sunderland's defence held strong untill the 83rd minute when Nicolas Anelka sneaked round the back following a Michael Ballack corner to head the ball past Martin Fulop to leave the Sunderland players devastated.

Sunderland 2-1 Blackburn Rovers (F.A Premier League)
DJALO
RICHARDSON

Sunderland kept up their good form this season with a decent win over Blackburn Rovers at the Stadium of Light despite being dominated for most of the game. Blackburn started the better and on the 7th minute, Anton Ferdinand was judged to have pushed Christopher Samba in the box and referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot. Rovers midfielder Keith Andrews stepped up but Sunderland keeper Martin Fulop guessed the right way and pushed the ball round the post for a Rovers corner. Rovers continued to pile on the pressure but Martin Fulop again was equal to the task making a fine double save from first Brett Emerton and then Steven N'Zonzi. Rovers were finally awarded for their good start in first half added time when Christopher Samba jumped highest to header in from close range to give Rovers a 1 goal lead at the break. What ever Sunderland manager Ryan Stubbs said at half time clearly worked as the second has was the complete opposite to the first. Sunderland wasted a fantastic chance when Kieran Richardson shot rebounded off the post but Kenwyne Jones could only put the ball over to the frustration of the home crowd. Sunderland's pressure was awarded on 66 minutes when Yannick Djalo's 34 yard screamer was too hot for Rovers keeper Paul Robinson who could only push the ball into the net. Blackburn came back strongly and hit the bar when Keith Andrews rose highest in the Sunderland box. Sunderland did however grap the winner with only 5 minutes to go. Kieran Richardson who has been on good form so far this season finished off a superb Sunderland move which included 28 passed.

Sunderland 3-3 Watford (Sunderland win 4-3 on penalties) (Carling Cup)
LAZOVIC
CAMPBELL (2)

After making 8 chances from the side that beat Blackburn Rover 2-1 at the weekend, Sunderland had to rely on penalties to get past Watford in the Carling Cup this evening. Danko Lazovic gave the Black Catts the lead after 25 minutes after good work from Jordan Henderson on the right hand side. 12 minutes later though, Don Cowie had leveled for Watford with a close range shot after Craig Gordon droped a cross from Henri Lansbury. The game was quite untill the 76 minute when on loan Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley beat 3 Sunderland defenders to put the ball past Gordan in the Sunderland goal to give Watford the lead. Sunderland pressed for an equaliser but keeper Scott Loach made save after save to deny Fraizer Campbell and Charlie Mulgrew. How ever, on the verge off full time Fraizer Campbell was found unmarked in the Watford penalty area and smashed the ball home past the helpless Loach. Watford started extra time the stronger and on the 99th minute, Will Hoskins pulled away from his marker to head the ball home following a Tom Cleverley corner. Watford must have started to celebrate early again because on the final minute of extra-time, Fraizer Campbell poked the ball in an empty net after a goal line scramble. So the match went to penalties. With converted penalties from Yannick Djalo, Fraizer Campbell, Lee Cattermole and Jordan Henderson for Sunderland and Jon Harley, John Eustance and Will Hoskins ment that Ross Jenkins missed penalty would cost the Coca-Cola Championship side the game.

Stoke City 0-2 Sunderland (F.A Premier League)
BENT
CAMPBELL

Goals from Darren Bent and a third goal in two games for Fraizer Campbell gave Sunderland a 2-0 win over Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium. Sunderland went ahead after only 8 minutes when Campbell set up Bent for his first of the season. Sunderland pushed for a second and would have had it if the flag would have stayed down. Darrent Bent again finished neatly but looked up to see the assistants flag up. Charlie Mulgrew then hit the cross bar with a stunning free kick and Fraizer Campbell missed from close range after good work from Lee Cattermole. Sunderland started the second half well and and Fraizer Campbell finished well to get his third goal in two games and Sunderland the 2-0 lead. Stoke's James Beattie and ex Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead forced saves from Craig Gordan but Sunderland held on to end the month unbeaten.

Injury News:
The month of August will be remembered for the teams unbeaten start to the season. This was helped by not picking up any injuryies during this month.

F.A Barclays Premier League Table

Under 18's News:
The Sunderland U'18's have had a bright start to their season. With 3 wins out of 3 games in group 6 including a 2-1 win over rivals Middlesbrough. The form of striker Matthew Fletcher has impressed manager Ryan Stubbs and Ryan has decided to make him available for reserve team games now.

Gaffer's Thoughts:
Well what can i say? what a month it has been for us. With some great results away from home against Bolton and Stoke. A fantastic draw at home with Chelsea, although i believe we deserved more than just a point. The team are sitting second of in the league, its certainly been a month to remember. I have been pleased with the form of new boy Charlie Mulgrew and goalkeeper Martin Fulop, hopefully they can carry on their great form in to next month. UP THE LADS!
