I've always wondered if putting your young players on the bench (and not necessarily playing them) would help them develop, managers tend to do this in real life to give the youngsters experience and just get the general feel of it. does this help there development in the game.

As far as I know, sitting on the bench won't help them improve. Training, tutoring and game time seems to increase the rate they improve.

^ Essentially that. Just give them around the last 10-15 minutes of games you're comfortable/reasonably leading. It should boost their development really well.
