After 4 minutes of extra time the final whistle blew. South Africa as a WHOLE, including all media were convinced we had qualified top of the group. A mere hour later and confirmed reports from CAF stated we were OUT!
I cannot recall such a moemish on such a big scale !
Read the technical full story at Kickoff.com or Sports24.

I feel for the boys but it is unbelievable that the technical staff were not aware of this.

Devastated! SHAPA Bafana SHAPA! See you in 2013 on hometurf :( :( :'(

yeah, to bad for RSA. could blame the media abit, cuz they didn't inform them the right things, and with that assumption, RSA though a draw would be enough. :P

South Africa Miss Out On Cup Of Nations Place After Monumental Misunderstanding » Who Ate all the Pies

Poor old South Africa manager Pitso Mosimane made a right mess of his team’s final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the weekend.

The 47-year-old manager was convinced that his side needed only a draw against Sierra Leone in order to make it to the finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, and his side duly obliged, playing out a goalless draw in Nelspruit.

His players and coaching staff even celebrated at the end, in the apparent knowledge that they had done what was needed. Indeed, the state run African Broadcasting Corporation even reported on the qualification. Except, they hadn’t qualified at all.
It quickly transpired that Mosimane (and everyone else, it seems) was a big eejit and had misunderstood the rules. In reality his side needed to win their remaining game against Sierra Leone, as despite ending up on level points with Niger, the head-to-head ruling meant that it was the central Africa side who progressed.

A frustrated Mosimane explained: “It’s very sad for South Africa because the country deserves to be in next year’s Nations Cup. I feel like I have failed,” (he feels like he has failed???)

“Do you think I would have left (striker) Majoro on the bench and put on a midfielder if I knew that we needed a goal? It doesn’t make sense.”, he said.

“Africa is a jungle, my friend,” he continued. “The European and South American formats are so much better because everything is running smoothly, but it’s very difficult to play in Africa.”

The men at the top need to be held accountable for this simple as that.

How come Niger went through even when Niger had a worse goal difference :S

could not find this :) made my own one! hahahaa!

you know what the worst thing is, people who don't have that much knowledge of our country (SA) probably assume that we in general are a bunch of dumb ***** if our National team does this!

this is so confusing?! why didn't they go through? niger had won more games but.. they had a worse goal difference? :S doesn't goal difference come first?

This has no racist intentions at all so avoid falling down on me .

Only in Africa :S

Each confederation, each competition, each qualifying, can have different rules when it comes to that criteria.

this is so confusing?! why didn't they go through? niger had won more games but.. they had a worse goal difference? :S doesn't goal difference come first?

Maybe it's done on games won primarily. That'd explain why Niger, with their 3 games won to SA's 2, are above them, whereas SA, having won the same number of games as Sierra Leone, are above them on GD.

Its the same rules as in Spain, If team level on points, head to head rule is used. Looks like the rules have change recently thou, Fm 11 has goal difference as first rule.

Raikan, what does Moeish(sp?) and Bafana(sp?. lol sounds like 'banana' XD) really mean.

well i kinda loled really, and especially with teh vuvuzela blow in celebration around the stadium. XD . HAHAHA.

Moeish, no clue :) hahaha, one of our like 11 official languages and most probably slang

Bafana translates into boys! so our national football team is called (in English) Boys Boys :)
