Reinventing Gegenpressing

Gegenpressing was the footballing philosophy brought to prominence by Jurgen Klopp when he took over at Borussia Dortmund. The basic principles of Gegenpressing are to press aggressively and high up the pitch in order to get the ball back as soon as possible with well rehearsed, coordinated pressing moves and a big reliance on defensive positioning.

In the past season however though it could be argued that the counter press has been found out how to be countered with Dortmund slumping to a disappointing 7th place finish in the Bundesliga and Klopp deciding to take a sabbatical.

My job in this save, will be not only restoring Dortmund to the top of the Bundesliga and Champions League final, but also to reinvent the system that made Dortmund the flavour of the month with all footballing hipsters and to try take it that extra step to European success.

The Plan

  • Implement my own system to the side and start dominating games using the system
  • Develop youngsters through the Dortmund II and youth teams
  • Win the league
  • Over take Bayern as the dominant team in Germany
  • Win the Champions League

My first impressions of the squad are very very positive. I'll be deviating from the 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3 (or 4-1-4-1, whatever way you like looking at it). The only major difference is that the midfielder that formerly played off of a pure 9, has now been dropped deeper to play in front of the defence. I like working with small squads (maximum 23 first team players) with the forward and midfield players in the squad being able to play in at least two different positions effectively, almost all players in the squad fit this requirement, and in Erik Durm and Kevin Grosskreutz, I have two very handy utility men.

Here is the basic principle of the tactic that I will be using for the save and my "first choice" starting eleven (I believe no manager should have a preferred first eleven, it should change game to game), it will get tinkered from game to game and tweaked when I feel it needs tweaking.

The first thing to note is probably that I am basically playing without a pure striker at the moment even though I have one in Aubameyeng but playing him wide! In choosing to not play with an attacking midfielder, I need my striker to drop deep and fill this gap and allow my wide strikers (who in Reus and Aubameyang are perfect) to exploit the gaps. I am of the belief that if you dominate the ball then you dominate the match and in order to do this, you win the midfield battle.

The main difference the squad will have to adapt to is the slower build up and bigger need to keep the ball. Ideally, I would want to be averaging ~55% possession per match, this does lead to another problem though, of the counter attack, which German teams are renowned for, this may be my biggest challenge at the start until the side are fluid in the system.

Key Men

Ilkay Gundogan

I am already identifying Ilkay Gundogan as the key component in the side. He'll be playing as an aggressive regista, perhaps surprisingly as I am sure most would play him as an interior. I will be demanding him to take the ball off the centre backs and drive on through the midfield, dictating play and switching the ball from side to side. The one downside to him at the moment is his positioning, but he is still young and it will improve. Any success this season will only happen if he learns this position, there was a few options to play in the pivote, but in Ilkay I may have found a gem.

Mats Hummels

The captain. Quite literally, my dream centre back (excluding his acceleration) on this game, absolute rock and excellent at playing the ball out from the back, but his acceleration does make me worry, seeing as we will be playing with an exceptionally high line in order to press as high and intensely as possible, one long ball and we could be torn apart.

Mr. Dortmund, when others jumped ship, he stayed. He won't be sold, his attributes are obscene and I will be hoping for 20+ goals per season off of him. Long term I could potentially move him centrally and play as the false nine, but for now I like him playing wide.

* Currently undergoing issues with installing the cut out face pack, when I get it working then there will be faces in the future.

Pre Season went well, the defence looks excellent leading in with 5 clean sheets on the bounce. In every match we played the 4-3-3 with the single pivote which alternated between Nuri Sahin and Moritz Leitner. This is because Ilkay Gundogan (and also Aubameyang) picked up a 7 week injury against Dortmund II and thus would miss the game against Bayern in the Super Cup. Gonzalo Castro, Nuri Sahin and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have all really impressed in pre season and have put a firm foot in the starting XI.

Super Cup

Usually, I am indifferent towards the Super Cup, and field a strong starting XI, with the incorporation of maybe two high potential youngsters (in this case perhaps Julian Weigl and Felix Passlack), but this game was different. This game gave us the opportunity to make a real statement by beating Bayern early on. I was short of three players who would have certainly started, in Gundogan, Aubameyang and additionally Marco Reus. The team that I went with was as follows:

Burki - Piszczek Hummels Sokratis Schmelzer - Nuri Sahin - Castro Bender - Kampl Mkhitaryan Kagawa

whilst Bender doesn't fit my possession based game, he will be a big component in my squad - the aggressive ball winner - that I will employ in almost all big matches (i.e vs Bayern, away to Leverkusen, away to Schalke)

"Dominate the ball and you dominate the match" I believe I said, I was made to eat my own words. We were absolutely outstanding defensively, Bayern didn't have a clear cut chance all game. Positive signs for the upcoming season, for certain.

I played a fairly second string side and to be fair, most of the players took their opportunity, namely Jonas Hofmann, who scored a great goal. We won't learn too much about the side by beating teams like Heidenham but one thing that's for sure is that at the same time, we need to be beating them.

It sounds strange to say considering we didn't win even playing against 10 men for 20 minutes, but we were absolutely outstanding in this match. For most of the match we were sitting at 57% possession and all of their shots were speculative to say the least. On a brighter note, that is now SEVEN clean sheets in a row.

The Group of Death beckons for us! All neutrals will be licking their lips at the prospect of the new look, possession based Dortmund side, versus the powerful quick, dominating Liverpool and Real Madrid sides. Group G and H also look very very tasty. My initial target is simply to get out the Group, and it will not be easy, two wins against Zagreb are absolutely vital, and we open our campaign at home to them.

An absolute freak game, four penalties, Mats Hummels (whom got a 4.6) and Jerome Boateng conceding two each. Quite simply, the difference was Manuel Neuer, had he been playing for my team and Burki for Bayern, I feel we would have won the game. Already, we are 5 points behind Bayern, the league might be evading us already...

Pep Guardiola says that league titles are won in the first 8 games and the last 8 games, you have to be in with a chance at both stages, at this rate, we will be nowhere near. Kevin Kampl scored a screamer to save our blushes, but again, defensive errors from Sokratis and (once again) Hummels cost us dearly as we dominated the game but couldn't collect all three points. We simply need to be more clinical at the moment, this just won't do as we continue to slip further adrift from Bayern.

Now we're talking. We were due a hammering of a team, and unfortunately for Zagreb, the results against Bayern and then Paderborn, the boys were out for blood. They were much more ruthless and completely dominated the match. Mkhitaryan now taking his tally to 6 in 6 games, he has been a revelation in the false nine role. At the end of the day, in order to qualify from the group we simply had to get a win here, and a big one at that.

Our first win of the season in the Bundesliga, and perhaps a very flattering one as you can see Frankfurt controlled the possession. Marco Reus is beginning to show me why he is the main man going forward for me with a glorious hat trick.

Worst performance of the season, I know we won, but watching the game was painful, we were honestly very poor and I don't know how we got out with 3 points. As they say, Champions have to win ugly, but that was hideous.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan man, the guy is too good. This was very much a case of one extreme to the other, outstanding performance. 38 shots in 90 minutes against a team I considered to be dark horses in the Champions League race. Also, Ilkay Gundogan has just shown me why he is the ideal regista for the club.
