When do people look at replacing Vidic?
Who have you/would you replace him with?

Im currently in the middle of my 3rd season with Man Utd, (2nd Dec 2015) for first season and half Vidic was my first choice, now, after injuries and a dip in form, I mainly use Evans and either Smalling or Jones now. Vidic is coming towards the end of his contract and cant decide if I should keep him for an extra season or replace him??

I don't think Tom Thorpe or Michael Keane are adequate replacements at that level, what have others done with those two? I currently have them on loan

I have a new re-gen, Elliot King, 17yo out on loan too, would be a great replacement but will need a few more years, probably longer than Vidic has.

No, Micheal Keane is not that level of quality on FM14. Balanta/Umtiti/Doria/Martins-Indi are all excellent CB who can replace Vidic. And since you're Man United, you should have an excellent budget. Actually, maybe try for Marquinhos or Varane? Both would break the bank though, so probably not.

But if it's a short term CB you're looking for, maybe try Subotic? He's outstanding, and by the time he'll be growing old, your regen should have come up nicely. Marc Bartra is another option..

If Vidic's injuries have not caused his attributes to dip massively, I'd still keep him for a couple of years, mainly to tutor youngsters.. You should be able to afford him.

I can't recommend Umtiti enough, signed him on my newcastle save and he formed a excellent partnership with Mbiwa in defense, excellent centre back and can chip in with a lot of goals from corners.

i have had the same issue and seems like i'm at basically the same point in my game as you, same season and time, i dealt with phasing out vidic at the start of the season. my first choice pairing was jones and vidic over the first 2 seasons. i bought balanta in the summer to play the "jones" role and have paired him with smalling, i find they offset each other well and they have done well together. i tried jones and balanta but because neither is fantastic at jumping and seem to be similar players to me, so i scrapped it. vidic and evans are back up for me now. i have also bought tin jedvaj who is joining at the end of the season so i'm letting vidic's contract expire and letting jedvaj take his place. thats what i have done

thanx for the ideas, Doria and Subotic were on my radar, along with Shawcross (I like to buy/keep British where I can) but I have had them all mentioned above scouted.

Considering keeping him for an extra season, as his form has picked up as I have Smalling and Jones out injured.

I find Evans better than both Jones/Smalling, though Jones seems to keep improving

Thats fair enough, I play my lads on form mainly tbh. Evans did well first season for me and knocked Vidic out of the team at one point and ended up starting champs league final. As long as they play well consistently they're my kind of player

Fair point, I am probably the same to be honest, I was referring more to in general.
1st season I had Evans/Vidic first choice
2nd season Evans/Smalling
This season started Evans/Smalling to Evans/Jones to Evans/Vidic due to injuries.

Thinking back Evans has probably has the least injuries too making him higher up the pecking order by default I guess

I never use Jones in Central Defense. Sure, he is pretty good there. But, and I can't recommend this enough, he's simply outstanding at RB. Without any retraining. He alone made it to Team of The Year from my Southampton team. He's as good, if not slightly better than Rafael. When managing Manchester United, Phil Jones at RB got around 9-10 MotM, and was simply brilliant in general.

Ahh i see what you mean when you say in general.

Haha good old injuries but i've been very lucky so far on this game and only had Welbeck out for a couple of months, thats been my only long term injury
