Why even use them? I never buy players who are not going to make an impact on my first team, so I refuse to pay for players who will just sit in the reserves. I usually just let my older and younger players in my first team play in the reserves and loan out everyone who does not make the cut.

Should I be doing this? Do people build their reserve teams? If so, why?

I build a reserve team for my youth players, like I assume most people would- When managing a Lower League side its especially important, as your not going to get millions to build a squad for the future and bring in talent. So every summer, I will scout youth players released from PL clubs and put the best of the best in my reserve's for the future.

Building for the future is important imo, unless you have £££'s [and lots of it, like Man City] or if your doing a Journeyman Save.

I actually just bought well over a dozen youth players as Man Utd and put them in my U18 team. Should I put the best of them in my reserves or will they benefit more from winning every game in the youth league?

I would still have them in my u18 team but make the best of them available for the reserv team aswell

I think a Reserve team is massively important, you must have one to keep players that are on the fringes or the bench fit, and used to playing your formation etc.

i use it just to keep players who dont play every week fit i never leave youth in there once they get to around 19 they are loaned out then if they are not looking anywhere near good enough by the time they are 22-24 i sell them with a sell on clause ofc never, also i tend to put transfer listed players in there to try and encourge people to buy them

I do what most of you lot do, place youngsters in there and any of my first team players that are in bad form or coming back from injury.
I usually don't loan players out unless I feel they will want first team football then I'll consider it depending on who comes in for them.

i tend to use my reserve team quite alot. i put old players, youth players that are on the verge of the first team, injured players or those coming back from injury, players that are good for tutoring but nothing else and transfer listed players in there as that way my youth players get to mix with some of the older lads at the club whilst they adapt to my formation. ( i let one of my coaches totally control the youth team including tactics as i find it better ). and then i find that if i call any of the youngsters up into my first team they do a better job as tehy aer used to some of the players and they are used to teh formation, and they play against more competitive players tehn if i leave them in the youth league.
