Have you ever done that? I have a 17 year old talent who is extremely good, unfortunately he doesn't fit into my tactic. He is a RAM and I could need someone on the CAM position, will it be possible for me to make useful on that spot?

start training him at that position and make him play often on it... After some time he is bound to learn playing on that position

yes you can do that but you need to make sure that he plays in the position you are training him as well. I always have a thing about training them to a completely new position that young though. I worry (although i have no proof) that it will stunt his development as part of his training will be dedicated to learning a new position.

I only start training players to a completely new position from about 21 onwards.....currently i have a player who i bought as a central midfielder, but trained him as a right back when he was about 23, and now he's the best rightback in the world.

I'll put him on loan then and wait till he is around 21-22, to retrain him to that position then. Good advice, thanks.

don't get me wrong, I really have no idea if it will affect him...but if i know say 15%of his training is going towards learning a new position, I'd assume it would mean he would develop other areas of his game 15% less.

If I were you I'd do the whole loan thing then bring him into the team slowly to pick up experience then retrain to the position. That is just my personal opinion though

On the other hand, FM has been telling us for years that players develop easier after the age of 24ish. I had: Jack Wilshere, Eden Hazard and Jack Rodwell on my Arsenal save. From the first to the second season, the two first were retrained to CM, as the last one was Retrained to DM. I'd say, from my experience, that it is better to retrain youth than first squad. All of this, obviously, imo. I think it is possible to retrain from a 'red' position to 'natural', not sure.

And it does affect the stats developing. The whole percentage thing is correct.

Follow up question : Would a player learn a new position equally fast if you lined him up in 2nd team matches on that position ? I wouldn't want to have him mess up my results because he can't play on that position in my first team...

im not sure if you can do that without taking control of the 2nd team and playing him in that position, otherwise the coach in charge will play him where ever he likes. I may be wrong but thats what i think happens

That's clear but I usually take control of 2nd team and youth anyways. My question is just if it makes a difference for the speed in which they learn the new position whether they play in the 1st or the 2nd team...

ah i see, i wouldnt think so but id recommend giving him first team experience against **** teams and in minor cup competitions

It should be more about game time in a position rather than at what level it is

He wont mess up your results that much, just play him in the cup games, and chuck him on as sub etc
