Roles to compliment the team or player attributes?

I'm just curious as to people's opinions on whether you should tailor your roles to suit the player or use the roles to compliment the system? I have my views on this but always looking to hear informed discussion.

A bit of both. I try to use a formation and system that enables me to use the most players in roles where I feel they'll excel in. So use roles that'll get the best, or close to, out of your players but never lose sight of how the system should function.
