They steam ahead into the league season but by Christmas, they are bored. A good first season
can sometimes alleviate this and see you through into the second season but eventually, you're back
to the Main Menu picking what nations to load all over again.

The easiest way to avoid this and get a good long term save is planning. To really
think about where you want to go and what you want to do. What kind of a legacy
do you want to leave behind and where do you plan to take your career?

The first step comes not with picking a club, not even with setting up your Manager, but in setting up your World.

For me (and many others) the cosmetic and aesthetics of the game needs to be just right
before I can even load up a save. The following are what I use to make the game that
little bit more immersive.

Unlock Germany, China, South Korea and Japan national teams

Face pack, Logo packs & Kit packs

JLeague: Database, Facepack & Kits

If you are planning on a long term save, there are some things that are just necessary. No.1 of these is planning for regens. Some Nations make better regens than others: This is an accepted fact. Spain, on average will produce better regens than Iran: That is not to say you wont find a World Class 16 year old in Iran, it's just more likely he'll be kicking a ball around in Madrid.

Nations are given two values that determine how good the regens are:

Youth Rating: How likely specific nations can produce an average amount of quality regens

Game Importance: is based on the economy, how it affects the people in the country, or how important football is in that country

Good regens will (most likely) come from nations with high values in both categorizes. The Nations I choose usually are:

The Manager
View attachment 354266

The golden question that most people may (or may not) forget about is the option to personalize your
manager. 9/10, People will recreate themselves and set the age to be 24. I enjoy doing this myself but having played FM since 2009, 5 years worth of playing as one persona has pretty much meant that every save is . . . .well, the same.

I like to invent a character and create a back story for them and role
play my decisions that I have to make in the save. Lets invent a bio now.

"John McDermot, 44. Irish National Team Goalkeeping Coach.
Just completed his UEFA Pro License. Follows his local club: Sligo Rovers
Favors Youth Development since he's worked closely with
the FAI's Youth academe programs.
Prefers quick, technical football.
"

Now I have a name, an age, a nationality, favorite team and long term vision.

I only decide who I want to manage after I've decided who I want to be. What kind
of a character/Avatar I design for myself really help me to get into the save and grow attached to the
little dots running around like maniacs on the monitor.

I personally am going to set up and manage my favorite Club: Liverpool F.C.

First. Get a feel for the club. Check out their history and find out what it is to be apart of the club. Grow proud of their previous glories and learn to hate their rivals. . . . And I mean hate them! :P It helps you grow in the the league and really care about getting points to catch up/ finish above certain clubs.

With Liverpool, their 5 European cups means that getting back to Europe is a priority. They have 18 League titles but having gone on a 20 year barren spell. the Title may not be a viable target just yet, but it should always be the ultimate goal. Liverpool fans are relentless in their yearning for the Premier League Crown.

Having previously been an established member of the Top 4, Liverpool 12 of the last 19 years in 4th place or above. This credits them with being a real force in England and never outside of being a title contender. But having failed to achieve higher than a 6th place finish in the last 4 years, Liverpool's pride as a football club has been hurt and the club feels wounded.

One of Europe's finest to English Mid-table in 20 years. . . . reverting this trend should be
yours first job as Liverpool Manger.

Pre-Season

Since I picked my start date to be June in Germany, the current date is June 18th, 2013.
The first week of training is a write-off since the schedule is automatically set to Average; Balanced.

I like to give my teams two weeks of intensive Fitness Training to get their Condition up to the 80% mark which should help them be sharper in Matches and avoid preseason injuries. Then one week of Tactics Training before the friendlies start to give them a head start to get used to the system.

View attachment 354226
Do not give players extra workloads (tutoring, learning new PPMs or new positions) until the season starts since you want them to hit their peak fitness and learn the tactics as quickly as possible. Increasing the workload will just work against that.

Now that I've the Pre-Season training handled, it's time to schedule friendlies. I personally think it's pointless to play big teams during pre-season. These friendlies are an opportunity to see how the players play together, to test the fluidity of the tactical vision and spot potential problems.

"Are they pushing too high?
is the passing movement correct?
are my strikers getting into the right positions?
are my Wing backs covering the wide channels well enough?"

You can't answer these questions against big teams since your players (and you) will be too stressed about getting a result that you'll forget loosing a friendly is more beneficial than winning.

Winning tells you what you've already known
Loosing tells you something you've missed.

I schedule friendlies twice a week, 3-4 days between each but giving 7 days between my last friendly and the start of the Season.

Backroom Staff
View attachment 354219
this part is expensive, I'm not going to lie. I consider staff costs to be a transfer expense.
The mutual termination fee and the compensation fee (for signing staff from clubs) comes out of my Transfer
Budget and I'll try match the offset by either

  1. Selling players to cover the cost
  2. Not spending all my transfer budget to cover the cost.

This way you can avoid having a sudden downturn in your finances int he first season since you won't be spending 15M on Staff and 35M on players.

View attachment 354214
For a club the size of Liverpool, to match their ambitions, 4 star coaches are an absolute minimum!
I've highlights the current 4* coaches at Liverpool and have offered Mutual Termination to the other 5
Coaches.

I now have vacancies in the following Coaching Positions.
Strength, Ball Control, Defending, Attacking, Handling.

Football Manager 2014 Staff Requirements is an excellent thread that outlines
all the important attributes to look out for when hiring your backroom staff.

Youth Teams.

The way I run my youth teams is that the U18's Manager is responsible solely for match day management
while the Head of Youth Development runs the day to day aspects of the youth set-up.

Tactical Knowledge, Man Management & Working with Youngsters are very important attributes
in your U18 Manger

When hiring Youth Coaches, I won't even consider it unless they have at least 15 in Working with Youngsters

Scouting Network

First port of call, check your scouting staff.

View attachment 354194
Be sure to look through each individual scout to be sure they are contributing to the scouting network.

Ternando Troiani has Judging CA: 15 and Judging PA: 15 but it's his
Scouting Knowledge that makes him worth his wages.

View attachment 354189

These are the guys you really want to get your hands on. Scouts who have knowledge are invaluable and are the "real" Scouts in my opinion since they are the ones who'll help populate the list of possible nations your youth academe can draw youth recruits from.

I divide my Scouting team into 3 categorizes.

  1. [*=center]Roaming Scouts
    [*=center]Player Scouts
    [*=center]Tactical Scouts

Roaming Scouts: 80% of scouts
They are responsible with scouting new regions and increasing our knowledge and player base

Key attributes:
Adaptability, Determination, Level of Discipline

Player Scouts: 15% of scouts
These are the buys who study players, watching them play 3-5 matches to figure out how good they are.

Key attributes:
Judging CA/PA, Level of Discipline

Tactical Scouts: 5% of scouts
These Scouts watch games of the opposition ion my league so as to figure out who the danger men are, what styles they play and who to target.

Key attributes:
Tactical Knowledge! Judging CA

That's all I can really think off for now. Hope this gives you renewed motivation to get stuck in and have
some amazing saves.

bro i can't think a better way to say what you just said

really nice tutorial , waiting for others

:)

I tuned out when you stated that Liverpool were your favourite team...

Just kidding, brilliant thread, very insightful and a good help, I tend to get bored easily of saves myself so I'm now sticking to just one & making it as interesting as possible

Fantastic thread. Just getting bored of my Southampton save and heading into a lull so this thread has really helped.

Fantastic read, really helpful even if you're just approaching a new season!

If people actually take that little bit more time, as you imply, to really look deep into the game, plan stuff etc there's a whole lot of more gameplay to be had with FM(14).

Cheers guys, Just my way of giving back to a community that gave me so much.

FM has always been a long term game for me, each save lasts 3-4 months spanning between 3-8 seasons.
I hate the idea of leaving a club after less then two seasons because lets face it, it's not your team until you've been there for at least 4-5 windows.
