It is my firm beleif, that when creating a tactic, you must pay attention to WHERE you will win the ball.

It is also my beleif strategy combined with defensive line determines this.

So let's take, for example, a flat 442 formation.

You have 4 players in centre midfield, 4 in defence and 2 in attack. By using standard strategy and no defensive line adjustments, you will make sure you win the ball in midfield. By using a defence strategy and no defensive line adjustments, you make sure you will win the ball in defence line. But, if you use counter strategy combined with higher defensive line, you will again win the ball in midfield line. If using a counter strategy with drop deeper defensive line, you will win the ball in your defence line.

In a formation such as 4231, you have three players in attacking midfield. So a control strategy would be great. Or attack with drop deeper. Or standard with push higher up. Or counter with much higher defensive line.

You get the picture. Where you have most players, use that area to win the ball, and use strategy and defensive line to your advantage. Of course, make sure your style fits this.

Counter should mean team positions deep (or very deep = bus parking) and then they break by playing organized (rigid) football. Usually a cross from back to a winger or a 3 pass counter with a pivot in midfield that launches the through ball.

In fm 14 its almost retarded. To be able to counter you must be "playing very high" which is stupid. Good for attack as its closer to the opposition goal but **** for defenders (who will get slaughetered by real counters if they are not pacey) plus having the opposition defending deep = no space to counter in.

Target man is a dead position also because of what i just wrote.

IF you position defense deep he`ll be a midfielder.
If you position defense higher he`ll get marked the **** out of the game.

You could perhaps set things up like this, combined with counter strategy:

Your defence line will be in charge of winning the ball

clear ball to flanks = wingers / poacher = it requires good off the ball, flair and anticipation. could work for really good teams madrid alike, for average = waste of possesion.

hit early + float = playing centrally = crosses from deep to the tall striker. If target man attack sole up front he stands no chance of scoring or good flick ons for the mids. He`s too isolated + completely destroys your wingers.

Shoot on sight = off the post. Waste of possesion.

Imo with that strategy you`ll have roughly 30-40% possesion and you`ll get totally hammered.

As i see it, counter should be played very tacticized. Rigid to very rigid with specific instructions given and specialist roles in the team. Whole team should be very deep, except for a winger and the target man (impossible to set up properly in fm14) who should stay up forward and look for a break.

Possesion should be won very deep, then pass to central mid who should roam to get rid of the marking then killer to a winger who should be very wide and sprint forward the moment possesion secured to receive the ball, sprint down the line, cross target man, header, goal.

Sounds easy, but to translate it in game can be quite difficult.

This is what i`m suggesting. very rigid, very deep, counter. 3 for my target man. However the winger does not move as i want him to.
And i bet i`ll be destroyed in the matches to come.

Hehe, this was slightly better, although the score doesn`t show it.

just realised i should use cmd on the left and btb on the right....even better results now when gaps have been reduced...
