Newcastle manager Alan Shearer labels reports stating striker Michael Owen will retire at the end of the season as "ludicrous".

owen's switch to real madrid changed his career. he might quit if better offers comes to him.

If the barcodes go down, that wage bill will have to be trimmed. It's huge. Fifth biggest in the Premier League - and Owen's 5 million a season is almost 10% of it. If you do the math, he's got to go this summer if Newcastle are relegated.

Who'll want him, I'm not sure. His sole asset was his pace. He's not got that any more and few teams will want a goal hanging midget who wants 100k a week wages. Sorry for him in some ways - it's sad to see him going for a through ball and then stop, realising that he no longer will get there before the defender. Is there a team in the lower half of the table that can afford him? I mean both in terms of being a passenger for 89 minutes of a game and his wages.
