I have 2 tactics, a possession based one with slow build up and a very fast, direct one. I use the fast one at the start of each half or if I'm desperate for a goal. The question is, should I keep swapping the two at different stages of the game or just play one throughout? What are impacts of this?

What's the reason for wanting to switch tactics? What's the reason for choosing one over the other?

you'd have to re do opposition instructions when you switch mid game but apart from that I don't think there's any reason not to as long as they are both ones known by the squad and you have the players on the pitch/ enough subs left to bring ones off the bench who fit them both. (latter point only applies if they are different formations)

I use the fast, direct tactic at the start of each half to try and completely mind **** the opposition and catch them off guard. Think Liverpool. Then i'll switch to the possession tactic to conserve energy and the ball and tire the opposition out and then in the second half use the fast tactic again. Just worried i might be messing with the players minds by doing this.

yeah I have very versatile players in those positions who can play in both tactics. :)

No, there are no negative effects like that. As sammyt said, you'd have to redo your OIs, but that's it.

Check the opposition scouting reports to see which 15 minute period they are most prone to conceding goals - and when they are most likely to score. Making your tactical switches to correspond with those periods should yield positive results for you.

Interesting, will try that as u have a similar method to the OP. Thanks

You must do it to win something, I always switch between my tactic, start slow and if I need to score change to higher tempo tactic, sometimes it can be the opposite, you need to sit deeper and attack on the counter
